3NTAll pass

East shouldn't be happy about not having any Aces, but nevertheless has a typical takeout double of North's 1 bid. With 12 HCP, a solid stopper and a side source of tricks to boot, West has an easy 3NT bid. Despite knowing that they are likely sitting over West in the suit, North really doesn't have any better lead than a low . With two Aces, it's quite possible that North will be able to get their suit set up even if the opponents have a double stopper. West can win the Jack with the King and will be pretty certain that North has all three missing Aces, with only the location of the Queen uncertain. If South has the Queen, then leading a at this stage will not work out well if North started with five s, so it looks best to lead a to the King. North will need to duck this, and declarer can lead a to their hand, getting the bad news there. However, declarer will know that North is about to have to make a lot of pitches on the suit. So, West can lead another and when North ducks again, run three tricks. North will have to make four pitches and will, indeed, but under significant pressure. Whatever North does, declarer will be able to lead a , and with seven tricks in the bag, should have no problem making at least two more tricks. It's not clear how often declarer will make 10 tricks when starting on the suit first, but with the layout of the suit, it turns out that starting on s before starting on s will work out very well. I expect that some conservative bidders will not play in game, so just making nine tricks in 3NT should do well for E/W, and +430 will be a clear top.

  PassPass
1Pass1Pass
2All pass

Once West opens 1, North will not be inclined to get into the bidding. East will respond 1 and when West rebids 2, the East hand isn't strong enough to bid again, given that the E/W don't look like they fit well together. If one of East's low s were the Queen, then the hand might be worth a 2NT bid, but here, passing is the better part of valor. Yes, it's just possible that West has a maximum and the perfect cards for game to make, but it's much more likely that E/W will get in trouble if East keeps bidding.

South should eye the vulnerability and should not be tempted to get into the bidding even if E/W are passing out 2. There is a principle among experts that letting the opponents play at the two level (particularly in a major) is a poor option at matchpoints, BUT this principle applies mainly when the opponents have definitely found a fit. After all, if the opponents have a fit, then your side does too, and when they have a fit and don't invite game, it usually means that the points are about evenly spread between the two sides. On a bidding sequence such as shown here, not only are E/W not playing in a major suit, but more importantly, they aren't known to have a fit a yet. So, the danger is high for South coming into the bidding. The current hand illustrates the danger quite clearly. If South bids 3, East will quickly double this, and N/S will have nowhere to go. 3 will be off three and South will be -800 on a partscore hand. So, the idea is to be aggressive at competing when the opponents bid and raise a major and then pass at the two level, but be less aggressive when the opponents take a simple preference to one of their suits before passing the hand out, particularly if you are at unfavorable vulnerability.

A contract will play quite well for E/W. It isn't clear what North will lead at trick one, but declarer should easily make nine tricks, and I expect that there will be some +130 scores on the board for E/W as well.

All pass

N/S will do well on this hand if they can get to their best contract, which is a partial. South has a normal 1 opening, and North will have to start with 1NT, perhaps hoping that they don't get passed there if N/S are using "semi-forcing" 1NT. Note that the North hand is even more problematic if N/S are playing old fashioned 6-9 non-forcing 1NT, which is one of the reasons that few experts play the old Standard American system. South will bid 2, which will not surprise North in the least. North will attempt to sign off in 2, but South has extra values and will make a natural rebid in 3s. This will again not surprise North who will know face a difficult decision. Playing in either of the possible 5-1 black suit fits doesn't look like the best decision, so North will either have to rebid 3 on their anemic suit, or bid 3. Should 3 be natural on this auction? I think so, as North has already shown a weak hand, and with a maximum for their bidding so far could bid 3NT, 4, or 4 with a good hand. It's hard to imagine a hand for North that needs to bid 3 as an artificial force at this point in the auction. However, this is a good thing to discuss with your partners, as many players will play that a new suit by responder is always forcing, or that Fourth Suit is forcing. I think that the current auction is the one exception to this rule. The general principle should be that if responder has already denied invitational values, then new suits should be natural and non-forcing. So, if South had rebid 2 over 2, North's 3 bid would again be natural and not forward going. South isn't quite strong enough to force game, especially given that North's bidding is shouting that the hand is a big misfit. With a doubleton honor, it is an easy choice for South to bid 3, and North does not have the values to bid game.

East is likely to lead a to cut down on ruffs, but with the 10 tripleton, and the Ace onside, declarer will only have two trump losers, and two minor suit aces to lose at most. In fact, if East does lead a trump, declarer can win and cash two s pitching a , and will end up with 10 tricks. So, top scores will go to those who somehow bid a game and make it, but just playing s at all on this hand should work out well for N/S.

1NTAll pass

Despite holding some decent spot cards, the 4333 nature of the East hand makes the hand weaker than the HCP would indicate. So, assuming the West hand opens 1NT, despite holding a five card suit, then East should just pass. Some pairs will open 1, but then what will West do over a 2 raise? It isn't always a bad thing to play in NT anyway even when you have an eight card major suit fit. Notice on the current hand that double dummy, nine tricks can be made in a contract but only eight tricks in a NT, BUT the defense has to lead s, or lead a , take the Ace and switch to s in order to hold declarer to eight tricks in NT. On any other defense, including the more likely lead, or lead with South playing the nine, declarer will be able to set up the suit and end up with the same nine tricks in NT as are available in s. I expect +150 to be a relatively common score for E/W, but there will certainly be some +140 and +120 scores as well.
