With a singleton and a six card major in need of work, North will override any suggestion to play game in notrump, and the sooner the statement is made, the less convincing South needs.

When the J falls, North should reconsider the straightforward line of drawing trumps. Instead, try to ruff diamonds in the North hand, take the spade finesse, hope that spades are 2-2, and cash two clubs. Despite the fact that the A is offside, this plan, eloping with the small trumps by ruffing diamonds while East helplessly follows suit, succeeds.

East made a rather poor overcall, letting South off the hook, but when West raised, North still had enough oomph to double for takeout, and then, optimistically, raise to game.

Optimistic, sir North! Many things are favorably poised for NS, such as the doubleton trump queen, and in some variations it might be necessary to finesse for the spade jack, rather than playing to drop the suit or hope for the ace to be onside.

But it can be made, as you can see from an examination of the hand record. Did you, without that aid? However, plus 170 might be almost as good at matchpoints. Remember, close games that take luck or great skill to fulfill, while paying off in tops, will achieve near tops just by playing your cards well and just being in the right part score.

East has the best hand at the table in terms of HCP, but has no good bid after 1 P 1. The pattern is just awful. West to the rescue! The East hand should not get the scent of game from West's competitive double, especially in light of the awful heart holding and the 4333 pattern. Enough to find a good part score.

Spades luckily make 110, trumps compliantly breaking 3-3, but clubs should score 110 in some comfort., so long as diamonds are played first by winning the K. After that, leading a diamond toward the ace cannot be hurt by North's ruffing, for that would be a loser ruffed with a dangerous trump holding.

So 110 is a likely EW score in either spades or clubs. Beating 2 a couple of tricks just isn't quite as good.

Balancing notrumps resemble weak notrumps, both being in the 12-14 HCP range for balanced hands. West will balance 1NT when North opens 1 and no one can bid, and South might have a wary eye on the red stripe (dangerous vulnerability, minus 100 for each undoubled trick, 200/500 for doubled undertricks).

1NT is relatively safe, offering East a variety of contracts, but today the 1NT spot seems just about right.

The only reason this hand can possibly take ten tricks is the lucky layout of the club suit, allowing the "intra-finesse" to garner two club tricks for declarer. Here's how it works: In the absence of a terribly unlucky lead such as the T, declarer can lead and pass the 8, losing to the J, but then later, by leading the Q, pins the T and scores two club tricks. Of course, the T lead gives two club tricks on the get-go.

The reason the computer gives South making 4, but North just 2 lies partly on the club situation, but also because West cannot lead a heart with the same effect that a heart lead from East would have. South can thus make ten tricks, North just eight, based on the lead potential.

Of course, South will NEVER play spades, so all of the above is completely academic.

For eight consecutive turns following East's initial pass, everybody bids for eight consecutive turns.

East did a yeoman's job after passing, introducing a nine-high suit and cue-bidding to make a game try, but West cannot quite get there from this beginning. Perhaps his mind should consider that the hearts are probably well-placed on the auction, and that the diamonds might be as well, to justify South's opening bid. That gets West close to bidding game, but it is the spade honors vs. heart honors that are elusive.

Kudos to those EW pairs who do bid game constructively, luck is with those who get pushed.

South needs some value bid from North to bid this game, and North's sequence provides just that, 1NT forcing followed by 2NT showing right at 11 HCP. North has a bit extra in the form of an excellent club suit, but it is not enough to force game after a 1 bid by today's standards.

Making the eleven tricks available as shown by Deep Finesse will require delicate handling and a Deep Finesse, indeed, playing a spade to the nine on the first round of that suit. Perhaps the prior play will suggest that somehow, but normally it would appear that playing spades from the top is the better method, winning against Qx, Jx, QJ, or any singleton honor in the West hand, breaking even against all 3-3 splits.

Nine top tricks may be all some declarers manage.

The number of tricks taken by declarer will depend precisely on the opening lead.

A trump will result in nine -- A followed by three clubs seems easy for the defense.

A heart lead will allow two club discards, after which declarer will lose one club, one spade, and one diamond.

A diamond lead will threaten eleven tricks unless the diamond ruff can be found -- declarer will play a heart at trick 2, finessing the J, then the AK, discarding clubs, and then a spade. East will lead the K, which West must overtake to give a diamond ruff. Otherwise, eleven tricks.

North has 2 1/2 quick tricks and a halfway decent four card diamond suit, suitable for lead purposes, if the opponents gain the lead. Accordingly, an opening bid is not out of line. South bids 2, game forcing, and North is stuck. 3 seems the least of evils, and South is encouraged to bid 4, Minorwood. After North owns up to two key cards, South bids the club slam.

Will South find the only opening bid that beats the contract? A diamond does the trick, but only on trick one.

If that's what it takes, I'd say that the slam should be bid. Otherwise, South knocks out the trump ace, unblocks hearts, ruffs a spade, draws a second trump and discards a diamond on the A. Then get to hand and draw the last trump. Claim time.

The first bid after the raise was ostensibly a game try, declined. However, 4 was clearly a slam try, for game has now been forced, and that fact relates back to the club bid (the cards have not changed).

But West cannot help at all, and East should be happy (well, not really. Let's say East is resigned) to passing 4.

PassPass?

East will probably bid 5, not really having an alternative. Double is probably the alternative, not 5, for the club void is a drag on the offensive prospects, and with two aces and club shortness, it would appear that the defense would be profitable.

Wrong!

In fact, if West leads a heart, the defense fails and the result will be minus 590. Only a club honor lead beats 4.

5 seems unilateral by East, and unjustified by West, but if anyone can muster that bid, playing hearts is the winner. Slam??? Well, that is a bit much to foresee.

East might expect some support for hearts from West, who is marked with spade shortness, so might well bid 5. That is at least some inference beyond just looking at East's own cards.
