  1. typically 6-11 high card points
  2. Game Forcing (GF)

This week starts off with a little controversy. Typical partnership agreements based on modern standard bidding methods say responder should have 6 points to respond at the 1-level, but I am in the Paul Thurston camp, if responder has an ace (and a reasonable hand) he owes opener a bid.

Bidding: In the auction here, South with 14 hcp and a 6-5 (come alive) hand opens the bidding 1 and North responds 1NT. South has a 4 loser hand, the equivalent of a 19 hcp hand and makes a Jump Shift to 3 (GF). North bids 3, South bids 3 and North says ok 4.

Play: From the outset it looks like declarer (South) has one trip to the dummy and takes it on opening lead with the A. South would very much like to reach dummy twice to finesse for spades and finesse for K. But with a partnership holding of AQJ10 declarer can make a safety play on diamonds, so South wins the A in dummy and leads the 9 to finesse for the J. So East/West have the right to win the A, A and K, making 4.

  1. 12-14 high card points balanced

While double dummy says this deal will make 6 or 6NT, I don't think you can get to slam.

Bidding: West deals and with 13 hcp and 7 losers (opening values) opens the bidding 1. North/South are silent throughout. East with 14 hcp and 6½ losers (opening values) responds 1, East as the undefined hand has captaincy and must force the auction to game. West bids 1NT showing a balanced hand and limiting his values to 12-14 hcp. East bids 2 artificial as New Minor Forcing asking West to further define his hand. West with nothing special bids 2 showing 3 hearts and denying 4 spades. East revalues his hand to 17 support points not enough opposite a 12-14 hcp balanced hand for a slam try and bids 4.

Play: There is not much tricky to the play of this deal, there is only one way to finesse for the J so declarer (East) win the opening lead with the A and crosses to the K and and finesses North for the J. Everything else falls into place.

  1. GF
  2. 12-14 high card points balanced
  3. extra values

I am often critical of missing minor suit slams, but typically those are occasions where a major suit fit could not be found. (see Board 19)

Bidding: North deals and opens the bidding 1. South makes a 2/1 forcing bid of 2, some might play standard methods where 2 is forcing one round F1 , but in the auction here, 2 is game forcing GF. After 2 North has a perfect rebid of 2NT, some might consider 2 but North only has 5 hearts and and 2NT perfectly defines North's 14 hcp balanced hand. Where 2 showed values, South's bid of 3 now shows shape and further defines values: regarding shape South holds 5+ clubs and exactly 3 hearts and is probably either 2-2 or 3-1 in spades and diamonds and regarding values South has defined extra values (otherwise South would just bid 4).

In fact South holds 16 support points but the points are not all working. Move the A to the A South would have a much stronger hand. So when North bids 4, South is not in a position to pursue slam.

Play: There is not much to the play of this deal, as long as East/West don't lead trump. Leading trump should be a defined play, not a lead you make because you DONT know what else to lead. So E/W are entitled to the A and a heart trick.

  1. probably an opening hand
  2. 10+ high card points
  3. much better than opening 2

Here is an interesting (and probably controversial) deal. After 3 passes, how should East bid this hand? East holds 10 hcp, 8 spades and with 8-4-1-1 shape just 5 losers . Some might consider bidding 4. It looks like with 3 passes and East holding 10 hcp, everyone holds 10 hcp. So bidding 4 on 20 combined hcp looks a lot like masterminding the auction - partner could be void in spades. With 8 hearts a argument could be made 4 might be right not to let the opponents in the auction with spades, but holding 8 spade there seems to be no reason to preempt hearts.

Bidding: After three passes, in the auction here East opens the bidding 1 and not playing Drury West responds 2, playing Drury West would respond 1NT semi-Forcing. Either way East rebids 2 ... this 2 bid shows a better hand than East opening 2 in 4th seat (an opening hand). West might now bid 4 (I would have) but on the side of caution West bids 3 and East is happy to bid 4.

Play: There is no issue in making 4, the only issue is finding the Q. On the first spade trick South drops the J so does declarer (East) finesse North for the Q or play for the drop. Looking a two singletons, I would probable get it wrong, but in the play here (double dummy) East plays for the drop. North/South have the right to win their two ace A and A.

  1. 12-14 high card points balanced

Here is another minor suit slam that can't be bid. (see Board 9)

Bidding: West opens the bidding 1 and East responds 1. West bids 1NT showing a 12-14 hcp balanced hand. West with a 17 hcp balanced hand could bid 4NT as a Quantitative notrump bids try for 6NT, but with West limiting his hand to no better than 14 hcp (31 hcp max combined), it would be an iffy slam without a source of tricks. If West had more diamonds, West might make a slam try for 6, but East bid of 1NT limits this possibility also. East settles for 3NT.

Play: In the play here, North's lead of the Q gives the whole club suit up for declarer (West) to win 4 club tricks. The play here also takes several other steps like taking a deep finesse on hearts, but the opening lead of the Q allows West to make 6.
