Weird South hand. Aceless, 15 HCP, a heart fit, and a bad six card spade suit. Unusual combination. North's 2 bid as a passed hand is standard fare, and South should probably just bid game, for from his vantage point there cannot be a spade fit, and all of his honors rate to be working.

Right!

Normal contract, normal auction, difficult distribution. With no suit set up to run after drawing trumps, that chore does not seem particularly urgent, so win the lead, unblock the A, and lead a diamond toward the king. Scramble ten tricks.

East's 3 is a heart raise, game or better values. With nothing extra and plenty of weaknesses, West will simply bid 4, making five -- ruff a spade, set up clubs.

North will do better to play 3NT than will South, and it's all because of the position of the J -- unfavorable because the queen can cover, trick one, promoting one extra trick, when South declares. North's J is protected from the opening lead.

At matchpoints that is very important, while at IMPs the difference would be minor. Matchpoints is a more demanding game.

South could bid 3, hoping for a favorable position on lead, but there is no guarantee that NS will get to declare 3NT after that bid. Just bid the game, darn it all.

EW are playing 3 or cheapest available three level suit after a major suit rebid as the double negative. For those who consider the immediate denial of any useful values as being important, I suggest that you consider using 2 as the double negative and 2 as the artificial positive! Marshall Miles originated a method based on that premise, but you don't have to accept his entire method. For this hand, however, we follow the standard method. One queen and one jack are very negative, indeed!

After the 3 double negative, East is grateful to be able to show his five card heart suit, but West is unimpressed, yet relieved that hearts will not be a threat -- 3NT it is.

When the Q falls doubleton, the prediction will be for ten tricks.

Craig Hemphill Hand Analysis

I don't see much point in competition or opening the bidding by EW, but some will offer some noise. The result might be unfavorable to this form of aggression, however, as 1NT is a likely resting spot for any EW pair that opens the West cards, and down at least one, perhaps more, will result in a very unhappy minus 100 or better, while the best score obtainable by NS on their own is plus 90.

Opening minimum balanced hands without quick tricks is a questionable practice in theory, but against weaker opponents might pose problems that will benefit the aggressive side.

Craig Hemphill Hand Analysis
WestNorthEastSouth
11NT?

Down one in 1NT. Unlike the situation in the prior board, North is not vulnerable, and playing for down 50 is a fair return against the theoretical minus 80.

Dash theory! East won't pass 1 nor the overcall, and NS is headed for a small plus. East will "never" pass 1 or 1NT after West opens 1 and East his 9HCP and three spades.

Would East double for penalties? Nice thought!

Craig Hemphill Hand Analysis

There is one conventional treatment that would allow South to make a bid that pretty well describes the hand -- by failure to use it! Many conventions have that effect, by the way. A simple example would be an opening bid of 1 by a partnership playing Flannery No four card spade suit there in the minimum opening bid range, is there?

Well, the convention I like was written up by Alan Sontag in one of his books, but in conjunction with a Precision 1 opening -- 3NT in response showed AKQxxx(xxx) in any suit, with nothing outside. I've adopted that bid in my 2 methods. Then opener can bid 4 to inquire the length of the suit, responder bidding 4 to show six, and single additional steps for each extra card. Then opener can pretty well place the final contract. If by miracle the 2 opener cannot identify the suit (really???), a provision is made for 4 to inquire, but I expect never to see that bid used. Not ever.

So here, when the dog did not bark (no 3NT bid showing solid clubs), after a 2 opener I suggest a 6 bid by South. With the backdrop of 3NT showing a solid suit, 2 - 6 must show this hand.

How's THAT for Precision (with a small "p") bidding?

Warning, however -- all of the above is based on a specific partnership agreement.
