All pass
  1. 15-17 high card points w/ heart stopper
  2. penalty
  3. 2 is transfer to spades
  4. lead directional, penalty oriented
  5. completes the transfer

This week starts off with a potential screwy deal. Many partnerships have the agreement that a Weak Two-Bid (W2B) especially in the majors is limited to 10 hcp, and thus, with a decent 6-card major suit and 11 hcp count length points and open 1M. In the deal here after East opens the bidding 1, I thought about South with 15 hcp and 4 spades making a Takeout Double . But a double is wrong for two reasons: first the double implies a hand with shape and South is balanced, and second South with 15 hcp will have difficulty with a rebid.

Bidding: East with 6 hearts KQ9765 (intermediates 9765 supporting the KQ a nice suit) and 11 hcp East opens the bidding 1. While South with 4 spades might consider a Takeout Double (an offshape bid), in the auction here with 15 hcp, a balanced hand and A108 South overcalls 1NT. West with 10 hcp doubles 1NT for penalty. North with an escape bids 2 as a transfer to spades. East with the opening bid of 1 has bid all his values and cannot raise to 3, so doubles 2 as a lead directional penalty oriented double. South completes the transfer to 2 and in the auction here is passes out.

Some might have West or East competing to 3 but South will compete to 3. If E/W continue to compete they will get 4 doubled or push N/S into 4, neither of which will be good for E/W.

Play: In the play, West dutifully leads the J on opening lead which declarer (South) wins in hand with the A. With no finesse against East, declarer plays the A with the plans to finesse against West which drops the singleton K; declarer can now finesse West for the J. Declarer gives up a heart and E/W can win 1 heart, 1 diamond and 1 club, making 4.

Fred Ferguson Hand Analysis

   Pass
11Pass2
33All pass

Here is another potential screwy deal. After West with 14 high card points and 5 losers opens the bidding, if East with just 5 hcp and 10½ losers competes in the auction E/W will either get the bidding too high (and be punished) or push N/S into game.

Bidding: West with 14 hcp and just 5 losers opens the bidding 1 and North overcalls 1. East with 5 hcp, a balanced hand and Qxx might consider bid of 1NT but this is really pushy, and thus, East passes. South with 5 hearts (10 trumps) and 13 support points might consider bidding 4 a LAW of Total Tricks (LoTT) bid, but chooses to bid 2as a limit raise in hearts. West bids 3 showing shape (two suited hand) and enough values to make a free bid at the 3-level. North with only 10 hcp or 11 support points and 9 losers bids 3. South might still make a Law bid and bid 4, but if E/W DONT compete, there is no reason for South to compete to 4 (10 trumps).

What is important about this auction is that if E/W compete nothing good happens.

Play: Based on the bidding, East leads out a club but it should not make a difference if East leads a diamond, all E/W can take on this deal is the A and 2 spade tricks.

This one is not so much a screwy deal as a bad luck deal.

Bidding: The bidding is straight forward, South with 15 hcp and a balanced hand opens the bidding 1NT. North with 10 hcp and 4 hearts bids 2 as Stayman and South bids 2 and North bids 4.

Play: The play of this deal should also be straight forward. I tried several ways to make this contract. One of my computer analysis made an opening lead of the K and then switched to the 9. This limits E/W to just one heart trick which was the only way I could find to take 10 tricks is limiting E/W to one trump trick.

Play: Sure enough declarer (East) is put on the spot with the opening lead of the 5. East determines that South would be more likely to be leading away from the Q than from the A and plays the J from dummy. After the A and clubs split 3-2, it is easy to set up dummy's club suit.
