Systems, systems, systems! So many times you might see me write, depending on partnership agreements, yada yada yada. This deal greatly depends on partnership agreements.

Bidding: East with 19 high card points and a balanced hand might consider opening the bidding 2NT.¹ But with 5½ losers a more common action, as in the auction here, East will open the bidding 1 with the plan on rebid to jump to 2NT showing an 18-19 hcp balanced hand with 5-6 losers.

After East opens 1 and South passes, West would like to find some way to preempt clubs, but unfortunately playing standard bidding 1-3 is a forcing bid and playing some form of Inverted Minors the Jump Shift in the other minor has artificial meanings, and thus, West passes. North balances 1NT, East reenters the auction with a reopening double (for takeout) and South cuebids 2 showing both majors. Now is the time after first passing West can bid 3 and when partner cuebids spades as a forcing bid, West just bids 4.

¹ Losing Trick Count does not claim to operate for notrump hands, but the knowledge of the number of losers in a balanced hand may be vital if a trump fit is found, such than the loser expectancy can be gauged.

Play: With the lead of a heart, the play of this hand is is not difficult, as in the club play here North/South have the opportunity to win QJ with declarer (West) pitching a spade on a diamond i.e., loser on loser. With the lead of a spade (difficult to lead away from AJ9x when the strong hand is on side) the play could get tricky where declarer must finesse North for both the QJ to make 4.

  2. heart stopper, no spade stopper
  3. club stopper, not spade stopper
  4. asking for ½ spade stopper
  5. denies ½ spade stopper

This deal is tricky. If after first passing, North responds 2NT showing a balanced hand with 10-11 hcp without either major suit stopped the auction could easily reach 3NT.

Bidding: In the auction here, North responds to 1 with 2, as an inverted minor suit raise showing 4 diamonds and limit raise values. All bidding after 2 are system bids. South's bid of 2 shows a heart stopper and denies a spade stopper, otherwise, South would bid 2NT. North's rebid of 3 shows a club stopper and denies a spade stopper, otherwise, North would have rebid 3NT. South's bid of 3 shows suit length and basically says no place to go, North could easily pass 3 but makes valiant effort of 3 asking if South has a half of stopper in spades. With Kx South would bid 3NT but with K singleton bids 4.

Play: Declarer (South) wins the opening lead of a heart in hand and crosses to dummy in diamonds (trump) and immediately leads up to the K hoping to slip the king through. West wins the A and seeing the J in dummy leads another heart which does not really do any damage. South pulls one more round of trump and gives up two clubs, losing 1 spade and 2 clubs, making 4.

  1. weak jump overcall
  2. 10-11 high card points and diamond stopper

Here is another minor suit auction, maybe a theme this week.

Biding: In the auction here, East deals and opens the bidding 1 and South makes a weak jump overcall of 2. West with 10 hcp and KQJ2 might consider passing and letting opener reopen the bidding with a double which West would convert to a penalty double. But with favorable vulnerability red vs. white, West tries for game bidding 2NT which shows 10-11 hcp and a diamond stopper. East has fully bid his 13 hcp and passes.

Play: In the play here North dutifully leads his 10 which gives declarer (West) two opportunities to finesse the A before losing control of the spade suit, making 2. On the lead of the 10, however, spades get spilt wide open from the start and West cannot make 2NT before spades get set up for, down 1.

  1. Takeout Double
  2. preemptive raise

Another fun filled minor suit auction!

Bidding: North deals and with 14 high card points and 7 losers (standard opening hand) opens the bidding with 1 (better minor). East with the best hand at the table 17 hcp and 4-4 in the majors could easily over call 1NT or, as in the auction here, makes a Takeout Double. Give East one more diamond KQx and clearly 1NT would be the better option. After East Takeout Double or 1NT, depending on partnership agreements, South's bid of 2 would be a simple raise and 3 would be a preemptive raise. The 3 bid is made here in an attempt to keep East/West out of hearts.

Play: The play of this deal is not hard whether East overcalls 1NT or makes a Takeout Double, pretty much all the missing values can be assigned to East hand. Declarer (North) wins the opening lead of the K in dummy with the A, and with limited entries to dummy leads the J playing West for having the Q instead of the A. East wins the A and is stuck for a lead ... West can cash the Q but anything West leads is away from values giving up a playing trick: cant lead a heart away from the K, leading a club sets up 2 clubs in dummy so West leads the K. All East/West win are the Q, Q and the A.
