  1. 18-19 high card points balanced

So right off the bat, we might have a tricky deal. East holds 19 hcp, 5 losers and a balanced hand.¹ If East opens 1, East might have a rebid problem. But in response to 1, East can make a jump rebid of 2NT and in response to 1 or 1NT Forcing East can make a Jump Shift to 3, so maybe things will be ok.

¹ With 5 losers, some might consider opening East hand 2NT. (see Board 1 from Tuesday 2/12/19). On this deal, however, East might have a bad outcome as West with 5 hcp will force the auction to 3NT.

Bidding: East opens the bidding 1 and South overcalls 2. West passes and North passes, hmmmmmm. On rebid, East could double, but partner will surely bid hearts. East could bid 2, 2NT or 3. With only 3 spades and holding KQx, in the auction here East chooses 2NT and hopes for the best with hearts.

Play: On defense, it is hard for South to find a heart lead from Axx, and thus, South leads the 9 as a benign lead not to give anything away. If South leads a club East can win K in hand and immediately lead a heart up to the K in dummy. In the play of this deal with South overcalling 2 it is not hard to count winners A, K, 5 diamonds and K, for 8 tricks. The only tricky part is collecting your tricks before the opponents can make a run in a long suit, thus, the lead up to the K ASAP.

Fred Ferguson Hand Analysis
WestNorthEastSouth
1Pass1NT1Pass
32Pass4All pass
  1. Forcing F1
  2. 16-18 high card points

This is not an easy slam to bid or to make. The double dummy analysis says 6 can be made, but to take 12 tricks: clubs must split 2-2, the Q must be dropped off side and East must have a singleton diamond, holding diamonds to just one loser ... not a very good slam.

Bidding: West deals and with 18 hcp and a good spade suit AKJ984 (give me this hand anytime) opens the bidding 1, North passes and East with 7 hcp and just 2 spades responds 1NT Forcing (1NTF). Not Vulnerable, South might preempt this deal 3, but East/West have not found a fit yet and South's spade holding of 1052 looks deadly, 3 losers double vulnerable, yuk! Give West a singleton diamond and just 4 losers, West might make a forcing Jump Shift to 3, but with 5 losers West makes a jump rebid to 3, showing 16 (good 15) to 18 hcp and good 6+ spades. Now it is easy for East to bid 4.

Move the K in East hand to any other suit, giving East singleton x of diamonds and 7 workable hcp, say AK97, and East might still be bidding.

Made 6 — NS −680

Play: It is not hard to argue that North might lead the J or the 3, but in the play here North, with no reentry to his hand, tries to help partner with the lead of the Q. So here is how to make 6 ... After winning the opening lead with the A declarer (West) leads a diamond to the singleton K so as to set up a diamond ruff in dummy. Seeing this South wins the A and returns a spade (trump) which declarer wins in hand with the A and then ruffs the last diamond from hand with the last trump in dummy. With no more trump in dummy for a finesse declarer crosses to hand with heart to K and plays spades from top dropping the Q and the 10. The only way to legitimately make 6 is a play like this where there is no other play on spades or to take some kind of safety play.

  1. 2-level overcall
  2. simple raise

Like Board 4, here is a slam that is questionable but not impossible to bid.

Bidding: East deals and with 17 high card points and just 4 losers opens the bidding 1 with the plan on rebid to jump to 3 or depending on the auction maybe make a jump shit into 3. But South overcalls 2 and when West passes North raised to 3. With West passing, East rebids his spades 3 and South with a void in spades bids 4.

North and South each had an opportunity in this auction to maybe push this bidding to slam. After South overcalls 2, North with maybe a little more, say the Q, might have splintered into 4 as game forcing raise in hearts and South would have been excited. After North raises to 3 and East bids 3, South could have made an encouraging bid, depending on agreements of 4 as control bid or 4 as a natural bid or even 4 as a forcing cuebid, in which case North would have been excited.

Play: This is not a hard contract to play, dealer (South) wins the opening diamond lead in hand and crosses to dummy with a heart, then leads a club picking up the Q and then takes a ruffing finesse on the K losing to East. East tries to cash a spade which South trumps and then pulls trumps and everything plays out.

  1. balancing

Like the others today, here is another crazy makeable contract but an impossible auction. From the double dummy analysis North can make 3NT.

Bidding: South deals and with 11 high card points , a nice diamond suit KJ10982 and just 6 losers opens the bidding 1. West passes and North responds 1. East passes and South rebids 2. And East doubles as a balancing double. West bids 2 and North bids 3 and then West bids 3 and South bids 4.

The only way for North to play in notrump is instead of competing in 3 is to bid 2NT, but the auction still probably will not reach 3NT.

Play: West dutifully leads the 9 which declarer (South) wins in dummy with A and leads a diamond to finesse for the Q. West wins the A and leads another spade which South ruffs and pulls the Q. Hearts and clubs might play out differently but all South looses are 2 hearts.

We have seen so many unbiddable deals today, lets see if we can legitimately get to a grand slam.

Bidding: North deals and opens the bidding 3. East might trying to make some kind of two suited takeout, but in the auction here East bids 4. If West bids something like 5, East/West should be able to get to 6, but that is not good enough in this deal.

In the auction here West bids 4 as a forcing raise in hearts. East bids 5 as a control bid and West bids 5 as a control bid. East shows 1st and 2nd round control in clubs with 6 and West bids of 6NT says pick a slam. East ops for 7.
