East and West each has enough values to heighten the desire to compete, but neither has quite enough -- East because of the lack of a long suit or either major, combined with 4333 distribution, and West because any action would require partner to act at the two level. Some may decide to act regardless of the flimsy assets, but in the long run acting with these hands will create problems of trust or occasional disaster.

North has either a 1 opening bid, playing strong notrumps, or a weak 1NT opening bid. The 1NT rebid pretty well defines the hand to be in the latter category, and South does best by signing off in 2, the one strain in which South's cards can contribute to the partnership's trick-taking efforts. Note that the decision to rebid spades is exactly equivalent to transferring to spades, then passing, when partner opens 1NT. Oh, and by the way, that is the right contract.

South has a borderline opening bid, but let's go along for the ride -- getting your foot in the door has some benefits, there is a modicum of defensive strength, and the lead-directional value is a positive. West can hardly be blamed for the 2NT unusual jump overcall, but today that choice happens not to work well. North, with shortness in hearts and two and one half quick tricks, along with four trumps to the A9xx, has an easy double of 3 or 3, and when clubs are the chosen strain, even happier.

Lots of optimistic bidding, countered by North with sound judgment and a willingness to double and defend (sometimes a lost art -- many players seem to think they must play the hands at all costs), will lead to a bountiful harvest for NS.

Overcalling a four-card suit should be the action of choice with values, length in the opponent's opening bid suit, and a fair suit -- See Michael Lawrence's book on overcalls. My experience supports the action.

EW cannot make anything of consequence, and the hand belongs to NS. The question is whether the 3 bid is a long side suit or some sort of farfetched game try? The way I couched the question begs the answer.

Craig Hemphill Hand Analysis

Those who dwell in the belief that computer-generated hands are somehow predetermined or "fixed" are wrong, of course -- the disasters that befall players are almost always self-inflicted. And this bland hand also belies the fiction. A bland hand that would have been tossed had anyone been scanning for interesting or diabolical results.

Even if South gets "active" by bidding 1 in second seat with second-rate values, there will remain the same final contract, except that the hand will be easier to play for EW! 1 double Pass 1NT by East and whether West bids 3NT or invites, 3NT should be reached.

South's bid will give away the location of the A and that will enable East to make the one play that will permit the contract to make -- by ducking spades twice, dropping South's Ax!

Without the opening bid, that play will still be made, but for the reason that the spade spots justify playing for finesses twice against the QJ, should the first finesse fail. But South's opening bid will reinforce the play.

North opens primarily for the lead or to compete and East overcalls the solid suit -- without the Q, it would be more descriptive to bid 2, preemptively.

South makes a Negative Double and West comes alive with a near-opening bid that hs been upgraded dramatically in the auction. So mush so that a jump to 4 would not be amiss later. However, after the confirmation of the lead-directional purpose of the 1 opening bid, East passes to allow West room to describe the nature of the cue bid. West understands East's pass to show some concern about game, so becomes content to a jump raise following the original pass and later strength-and-fit-showing cuebid. East finds enough to bid game, just making when the K is onside (lead TOWARD the Q for this finesse, of course!)
