North opens 1 intending to rebid 2NT. West makes a relatively light overcall of 1 with nice shape and South gets the first choice--I would stretch for a 2 call since you don't have the dreaded 4-3-3-3 hand. West is off the hook and North might go high, but the value of those spades has gone down with the overcall--I'd content myself with a 2NT invitation. South returns to 3 and is glad when partner believes him.

East leads a club--depending on style either the 9(as a sequence) or the 6 (count) or the 8 (MUD). Some Easts might start with a spade, but our auction (where North indicates spade strength) should deter that lead. Declarer counts losers and sees one spade, at least two hearts, one club and possibly two diamonds. He should try the J and win the Q with the A. Now declarer should cross his fingers and play K and another club--this might work even if the opponents get a club ruff (as long as they are ruffing with the hand that has three trump). Now declarer can try hearts by ducking a heart or by playing Ace and another. Ducking keeps you in control and keeps a heart in dummy for as long as possible, so it's a better start. Ultimately the bad split in hearts will doom this very reasonable contract.

After two passes, West might be itching to bid (especially at these colors), but without a good suit it's better to be patient. North has a Rule of 15 opening bid for fourth seat (and a normal opener anywhere else). After 1, East might put in a 1 overcall since they paid their card fee just like everyone else. Either way, South is likely to bid some number of notrump. Why 1NT instead of 2NT or 2 or 2? Partner is likely to open 1NT with even a good 14 count (and a five-card suit) and partner might open in 4th seat with less than full opening values following CRIFS--you don't want to bury your side.

West has to make a lead and plays the 8. You should win it in North and then try a heart. The West hand wins and plays another spade. Now you win in hand and then unblock the 10. Now you need to make a decision - how to play the diamonds. If you guess to finesse the J you'll make a lot of tricks. Whether you play low to the K or low to the 10, once west gets in, he won't have a good suit to attack and you'll still take a lot of tricks.

The vulnerability is the only thing keeping West out of this auction. South might consider a super-acceptance of the transfer, but doesn't have a maximum to go with their four spades. North quietly places this in game and South chooses spades.

With a strong hand to his right, West should try to make a passive lead of either a diamond or a club. Declarer shouldn't wind up losing any spade tricks in spite of the bad split- after finding about the break, he should get to dummy and play the 9 or 10 of spades and finesse. After drawing all the trump, declarer would be unable to ruff a heart so to make up for this declarer should lead the Q of hearts (covered) before finessing the 9 of spades. Since every finesse works on this hand, you can make 6, but that does not mean that you'd like to bid it--this hand is about 25% likely to make a slam and could go down two easily (two clubs and a heart) on a different layout.

West could open following the Rule of 20 or just counting an extra point for length or because it looks like an opening hand. Some Easts might choose to Game Force , but this is that terrible/no good 4-3-3-3 shape. Flat 12 counts are invitational hands in modern bridge since we encourage light openings. I like to play 1NT as semi-forcing so it could be passed if West has a flat minimum this might be where we play--so be it. West bids 2 and East follows through with the plan of showing a three card limit raise by jumping to 3. West has a bare-bones minimum and passes.

The awfulness of the East hand comes to light in the play of the hand. If East's two of hearts were the two of clubs, game would have a pretty decent shot. As it is, E - W are unlikely to be able to get more than nine tricks. After a diamond lead, a return of a heart or club will make life simple for declarer. After a diamond continuation declarer should win the Q play to the K and pitch a club on the A. Now declarer plays low the the A and another heart so that he can ruff the fourth heart in the event of a 4-2 split. Ultimately declarer will lose one trick in each suit to make his contract.

The East hand looks like an opening bid. Sure, it's only 11 HCP, but with a five-card suit AND favorable vulnerability it's a good time to open. South should bid 2 (double is tempting, but the club suit is headed by the QJ10 which makes it a suit I want partner to know about). West makes a negative double--here he lacks spades, but he can retreat to diamonds if partner picks spades. North isn't even good enough for a club raise. East regrets opening and bids 2 to try to tell partner to quiet down. West might just bid 3NT, but he would much rather his partner were the one to declare no trump. If partner has Qxx or even Qx then it is useless as dummy, but very valuable as declarer. East has already shown a minimum and shows their stopper by bidding 3NT. North leads a club which declarer wins in dummy and has to play diamonds. Which way? We can see that the winning line is to lead the Q, but declarer might not guess that right.
