West has to get a grip on reality. When the opponents both bid, partner must have a near Yarborough -- and here that is almost true, except for three tens! So West should just compete, not jump around. After all, what value hath the KJ? NADA! What value the Q? NADA! What value the Q? Unknown, but not nearly the value of an honor fitting with spades.

So West needs to remain calm, compete for a while, and see what happens. It is likely that by doubling, then bidding spades twice, a heart lead will be induced, and making the contract will be possible.

Evaluation changes with the bidding!

East might double rather than bid, with nine points, but (1) the old fear of third seat openers might deter, and NS can actually find, and would perhaps be motivated to find, their heart fit, a contract (2) that actually makes! Instead, 2 is a reasonable shot, and will likely make. Interestingly, the computer suggests that the opening lead matters -- West can make 2 on a double-dummy basis, while East can make only 1. That's an interesting fact, and should motivate the reader to learn by determining what lead could possibly make that one trick difference.

"Quality-Quantity" is a very useful adjunct to bidding after a single raise by opener of responder's major suit, wheeling all sorts of descriptive bids into gear. While I don't have any author to source on this convention, here is how I have played it: After 1m - 1M; 2M - 2NT, these are my methods:

3 - three card support, minimum hand
3 - three card support, maximum hand
3 - four card support, minimum hand
3 - four card support, maximum hand, AND WHEN HEARTS ARE TRUMP, a singleton !
When hearts are trump bid 4 with a max, four trumps, and no singleton or rebiddable m.

In addition, my methods permit Splinter bids in either unbid suit (see 3 above), i.e., 1 - 1; 2 - 2NT; 4 would be a singleton club and here 4 would be a singleton heart. Or 4, after the 1 opener, would show five diamonds, four spades, and 2-2 in the unbid suits, with a maximum hand.

So here, 3 shows four hearts, a singleton spade, and a maximum hand. North finds the magic cards easily with 4NT, and the small slam is easily reached. East had better lead a spade to get the one trick to which the defense is entitled.

An easy enough auction. South has a super maximum game invitation, and simply bidding game would not be far afield, but some of our partners open real dregs, so deferring to partner's judgment cannot be wrong, either. 3 is enough -- let partner participate!

There is some play to this, however. Declarer must negotiate the J! Suppose a diamond lead around to the ten or ace - if East plays the J. Now if a spade to the king is allowed to Win, declarer might have some problems. A heart back to the king (will West also duck??!!) and when another spade is lead and West follows small again, what is declarer to do?

On the other hand, if East WINS the A, then the proper play is clear -- run the T!

Another issue is how to play if the defense somehow leads clubs and forces declarer to ruff with the intermediates. Well, fine, but that helps declarer take some tricks while using up his trump energy, so that will not defeat the contract, even if two trumps are lost, for only one heart additionally will fall in the defense camp.

Potentially and interesting defensive hand, if East can find the duck of the A

Nine tricks in notrump are easy, and West should see the benefit after failing to find a spade fit. Only ten HCP, but FIVE tricks make the hand a game bid.

2 was, of course, New Minor Forcing , asking for clarification of opener's major suit holdings. Hearts should have the priority over spades even when opener has three spade support for responder's spade suit -- how else do you find a 4-4 heart fit when responder is 54xx? After the heart bid fails to locate a fit in that suit, 3NT suggests passing without three spades, or returning to spades with three -- why else the New Minor Forcing bid?

A quick glance shows no problem playing and making 3NT. On a spade lead, a club should be played to develop a trick in the side suit with the majority of cards, and the T inserted. Then South has the same problem as on the opening lead -- a bit endplayed. Another spade is met with another club and that suit, when cleared, gives South the third opportunity to toss a trick into the fray. Meanwhile, the 9 is an entry for later spade plays after the ninth trick is developed.

If declarer plays any other way -- such as running the spade suit prematurely, he will squeeze himself and ruin the hand.

With this amazingly powerful two-suited hand, North cannot be shut out below the 4 level, and South will have a field day deciding between doubling 4 and bidding on to five hearts. Actually, the winning call is to double 4 (plus 800 after repeatedly leading hearts and clubs, East can take just five trumps and two diamonds (after South is exhausted of trumps).

But 5 is probably an easier bid to make than to double with puny spades, five though they be. The defensive bonanza is somewhat dependent on East's not having SIX spades and on North's having such fine cards -- well that should be a given, based on the auction, but still.

In any event, West would convert to 5, now wouldn't he? And then it is on to 5 anyway.

   Pass
1NT2Dbl!All pass

If there were EVER a board that would pay off to play penalty doubles after an overcall of partner's 1NT opening bid, this must be it. EW can make ten tricks in spades and here they are defending a vulnerable overcall in that suit at the two level!!!

How do the negative doublers respond to this? They suggest that East should PASS!!! Really? Yes, really, I guess. Then they EXPECT the opening 1NT bidder to re-open the bidding with a double and that the penalty falls back into the lap of the EW pair. Sure, I agree that the double in the balancing seat by the opening 1NT bidder is for takeout, but...........

No, I'll just keep my penalty doubles, thank you. No Negative Double , no "stole my bid" doubles, "mirror" doubles. If they waltz into my partner's notrump bid, they will have to worry about being penalized.

Exception -- if they overcall 2, then unless it means both majors, my double is Stayman.

Relish the penalty double. Some suggest it is a disappearing species, but I hold on dearly to it, especially when considering the awful overcalls encountered.

Oh, if North passes and EW get to slam in hearts, South's Lightner Double double will have no problem being interpreted as a spade lead indicator -- will EW be able to scurry off into 6NT and escape? A sad day for the Lightner Double , if so.
