This week starts off with a simple deal with lots of options that leads into a great lesson on over bidding.

Bidding: East with 12 high card points and 8 losers (not untypical for a 4-4-3-2 or 5-3-3-2 hand) opens the bidding 1. With 18 hcp some with South's hand might overcall 1 with the intent to rebid spades (1NT would be a rare overcall) but with both majors, shortness in diamonds (maybe a worthless K) South has a perfect Takeout Double. West with 9 hcp and both majors QJ9 and Q96 responds 1NT (some might support diamonds). South again makes a balancing double for takeout and North pressed into the bidding, bids 2. As in the auction here, South continues to press the auction doubling 2 and bidding 3 (some might bid 4) but North/South are overbidding this deal from 3 on ... once South takes action over 3, N/S are getting a bad result. Granted South has the best hand at the table but 18 hcp and maybe not quite a good fit in a lower ranking suit, South cannot continue to press to the 4-level.

Play: If N/S get to 4x it will be a bad result, down 2 doubled is -300 and East/West cannot earn 300 points on their own as a part score.

This is an interesting deal, how will you bid East hand? East has 10 high card points , 6 losers and a self sustaining (only one potential loser) diamond suit AKJ10732. This hand easily meets the new ACBL Open Chart definition of an opening hand as an average strength hand. ¹

¹ “Average Strength”: A hand that has at least 10 hcp or meets the “Rule of 19”.

Bidding: East deals and opens the bidding 1, West responds 1 F1 and East rebids 2. East might have 4 hearts but not the values to Reverse so West rebids 2. Some might have West Splinter to 4 which put the responsibility on East to get to slam, while I like splinters after East has rebid 2, it is unlikely East will drive to slam after a 4 Splinter. In the auction here, West with 20 support points for diamonds maintains captaincy with 2 GF. East rebids 3 is natural and West's bid of 4 is RKC Minorwood asking for keycards in diamonds. East's bid of 4NT (3rd step) is 2 keycards without the Q and West bids 6.

Not the most exciting deal in the world but a great partnership training deal.

Bidding: North opens the bidding 1 and South makes a 2/1 Game Forcing bid of 2. North rebids 2 and South's bid of 2NT promises a heart stopper and a willingness to play in notrump. The interesting bid in this auction is North's bid of 3. Instead of just bidding 3NT North has the ability to show the shape of his hand with the bid of 3 showing a 5-5 hand in spades and diamonds. South holding Ax is happy to bid 3NT.

Play: West's opening lead of the Q maybe the worst opening lead in the history of bridge. North has shown 5 and South a willingness to play in notrump and MOST IMPORTANTLY even if West can create winners in diamonds West has no reentry to his hand. From the auction West may not know what to lead, but it is clearly not diamonds. Declarer (South) wins the opening diamond lead in hand and takes a spade finesse against the J.

Again, not the most exciting deal in the world but a great partnership training deal.

Bidding: East deals and opens the bidding 1. South with 11 high card points would like to get into the bidding, but with no 5-card suit East's bid of 1 freezes South out of the auction. West with 13 hcp responds 1 with the intent on rebid of making a forcing bid in spades. East however rebids 1, and thus, West makes an artificial Fourth Suit Forcing (4SF) bid of 2. East's bid of 2NT shows a stopper in hearts and now West with no extra values opposite 2NT bids 4.

Made 4 — NS −620

Play: South's opening lead of the 4 is a safe lead, not leading away from A or the K or the A. Play should be pretty standard losing to both black aces and a diamond, making 4.
