Although it's possible to end up in 6NT with the E/W, I expect most pairs will settle in a lower NT contract, either 3NT or 4NT. Although 5422 distribution is not automatically a bar from opening 1NT, I wouldn't do so with the East hand. With all of the HCP concentrated in the two long suit and both black suits wide open, it looks much better to open 1 and rebid 2 next. West will make a game forcing 2 bid and then rebid 2NT over 2. At this stage, East should be careful to not just bid a prosaic 3NT. East's 2 bid did not promise the extra values that it would have if West had bid 1 or 1NT originally. In other words, a "reverse" bid does not have the some promise of a strong hand when your partner's response has been a game forcing 2/1 bid. Thus, East still needs to show that they have a significantly better than minimum hand. They can do this by making a "quantitative" raise to 4NT. When partner's last bid was a natural bid in NT, most pairs play that a 4NT bid is not a keycard asking bid, but is instead a raise in NT, inviting partner to bid slam with a better than minimum hand. Does the West hand qualify here? The QJ are terrific cards given that East is likely to have some length in s (yes, I know East could still be 4432). The sixth is also attractive, as s will likely be a source of tricks if East has either the A or the Q. So, it wouldn't be unreasonable to bid 5 with the West hand, which should be a natural exploration for slam. With an honor doubleton, East could bid on to slam over that, but with only a small doubleton, East can retreat to 5NT and E/W might stop there. Some West pairs will even jump to 6 over the invite, and East will need to be careful to retreat to 6NT. Double dummy, 6NT can make with the right guess in s, thanks to the nice layout in the suit. As some players would cash the Ace on opening lead, declarer has a better chance to get the suit right. Experts players will recognize that the squeeze chances on the hand are much better if a to the Jack forces the Ace (remembering that declarer doesn't know about the position.) Overall, I put making 12 tricks at about 50%, so there will certainly be pairs who are in 6NT making and scoring a clear top for E/W.

  1. Forcing, checking back for majors

The bidding might go a lot of different ways, depending on the N/S agreements, but 4 will be a common final contract. If N/S are especially conservative opening bidders, South might pass, and if West ventures 2, they might well end up playing there doubled. With opening bids becoming lighter over time, there will be many pairs who won't even think twice about opening the South hand. Years ago this might have been unusual, but with three quick tricks and a five card suit, few players will pass. Should South pass, West might open 2, and if North doubles, and South will either pass, or place the contract in 3NT. 2 doubled will be an interesting contract. Careful defensive play will result in eight tricks for the defense, but they must arrange for a ruff, or declarer might manage to scramble home with six tricks. As 4 is cold and will be bid at most tables, it will not be good enough to set 2 by only two tricks. If N/S end up in 3NT after a 2 opening, nine tricks will be available, but careful defense can hold declarer without an overtrick. Anyone who goes +630 in a NT contract should get a near top as it is hard to see how a 4 contract can emerge with an overtrick given the poor break in s, unless the defense makes a major error.

This will be an unhappy hand for N/S at many tables when the bidding goes as shown. The South hand will have to decide whether to open 1 or 1NT. I don't think the hand is good enough to open 1 and then jump in NT. Although there isn't a complete consensus, the modern trend for many is to open 1NT even with a five card major. This won't work out well on this hand, as the rest of the table will pass, West will lead a , and declarer has no chance to make the contract. In fact, declarer may have to work hard to avoid going off more than one trick. Anyone who opens 1 will be much better placed. If North passes, East will likely bid 1NT and E/W will end up in 2 which is destined to go down. Even better for N/S is if East passes 1 out as declarer can easily make eight tricks even on a trump lead, and should make nine tricks on a lead. Almost all the matchpoints will thus be determined by the opening bid.

  1. Keycard asking
  2. 0 or 3 keycards
  3. Do you have the trump Queen?
  4. Yes, and the King as well

It's not clear that N/S should get to slam on this hand, and in fact the lack of the trump Jack makes slam an iffy proposition. However, the bidding shown does illustrate an important bidding principle used by many experts. The North hand will open 1 planning to rebid 2NT over most responses, or 3NT over a 1NT response. When South bids 1 however, North has a more difficult choice. The North hand is too strong to just invite game, so can jump to 4. South should know that North has a balanced hand, as North didn't choose to bid 3 or 4 which would show shortness and support. Is South good enough to push to slam? The suit is a big plus with North having opened 1. However, the suit is really terrible, meaning that slam might come down to whether North has the J or 10. If South does want to look for slam, many pairs will be forced to bid 4NT to ask for keycards. But this approach has a big disadvantage. When North responds 5 showing three keycards, South has no way to ask about the trump queen without committing to slam. For this reason, many experts play an agreement known as "Kickback". Under this convention, when a trump suit has been agreed upon, the suit one above the trump suit at the four level is always the keycard asking bid. So, as shown in the bidding diagram, 4 now becomes the keycard asking bid in s (and a 4NT bid over 4 would be a cue bid.) North's responses are the usual steps but starting with 4NT. Thus, 5 is used to show 0 or 3 keycards (assuming 1430 responses), and South can safely ask about the trump Queen by bidding 5. Kickback is an extremely useful convention when the trump suit is a minor, and is worth considering in your regular partnerships.

South will not be surprised to learn that the trump suit is indeed the main problem with a slam. West is highly likely to lead a , rather than the lead which would ensure declarer goes down. Declarer will need to decide how to play the trump suit. Declarer should come to hand, lead a trump to the King (assuming West ducks), come to their hand again and lead another trump. If West ducks smoothly, declarer will have a guess. Playing the 10 is best against good opposition, as there are some hands where declarer can make if West has four trump to the AJ, but many defenders can be relied upon to win the Ace the first time around if they are East, or to hesitate on one of the trump leads if they are West on the actual hand. Of course, if West does think for a long time, or actually plays the Ace on either trump lead, declarer will have an easy time making. +680 for making 12 tricks in 4 should be above average for N/S as few will bid to slam.
