4All pass

Some East players will open 2NT, and N/S will have no chance to get into the bidding. Even if East opens a more likely 1, it will be hard for N/S to compete after West makes the inevitable raise to 4. North will certainly want to bid 5 with a void and four card support and it certainly wouldn't be the worst bid in the world to bid 5. Looking at all four hands, 4 is the last making contract, but there are some defensive challenges, and 4 might be allowed to make and a 5 contract has a very good chance to make.

How can 4 make with the Ace offside? A high lead looks likely from South and on any lead but a declarer can set up a to pitch dummy's losing and easily make 10 tricks. Assuming South leads a , declarer does best to duck and win the next . Declarer can now pull trump and has no reason not to cash an extra two rounds of s. If North ever pitches a , declarer will have two extra winners in the East hand to pitch two losers from the West hand, and will not need the Ace onside to make 10 tricks. There will certainly be some defenders who don't see the importance of their suit and pitch one of them away. Declarer can help make it difficult for North by playing four rounds of trump before touching s, rather than just the two rounds necessary to pull trump. Note that South must also not discard a , otherwise they will be endplayed when they win the Ace. Also, for the aspiring experts out there, did you consider which hand to be leading s from to put maximum pressure on the defense? The best order is to start with the Ace and when North shows out, continue with a to the 10, then the 9 and finally a to the King, to start s from the East hand. This forces North to make their discards with as little information from South's discards as possible.

A contract is even more difficult to defend. If the defense leads a instead of a they are already hosed. Declarer can ruff, lead a trump, and later take advantage of the good break and the perfect layout in s to make five tricks, four tricks, two ruffs and the the Ace for a total of 12 tricks, losing only the trump Ace. It won't happen often, but there will certainly be some tables at which N/S compete to 5, East doubles, and N/S make 12 tricks for a top.

3NTAll pass

If East opens 3, then South will be stuck between a rock and a hard place. If South doubles, West might decide to redouble and if E/W end up doubling North in 3 this will be a disaster for N/S as it should go down two tricks. If South instead bids 3, West will be warned away from 3NT and will likely bid 5 which is the best contract for E/W looking at all four hands. However, if South quietly passes, I admit that I would bid 3NT with the West hand playing matchpoints. Yes, the suit might be wide open, and 5 cold with 3NT going down (e.g. the current actual hand), but the opponents might not have a lead (e.g. also the current hand), the suit might be breaking or 5 might not have enough tricks, especially if the King is offside. After all, in a 3NT contract, West is sure there are at least nine top tricks, assuming the defense is unable to run the suit. Well, almost sure. If you are prone to opening poor six card suits with a three level preempt, then West has a lot more to think about on this hand. Given the form of scoring, I would take my chances in 3NT. As it happens, 5 is indeed cold, and 3NT will depend on the opening lead. If North doesn't think about the bidding much and just leads a , declarer will quickly take at least 10 tricks. If North leads a , declarer will likely end up with 12-13 tricks. However, if North understands that a 3NT bid over a minor suit preempt, especially at this vulnerability, is often a bit of a gambling bid, then the best lead by far is the King. With no high honor in s, South needs a lot of help for a lead to be right. At IMPs, the King looks like a clear winner. At matchpoints, it might give away an extra trick with 3NT cold on any lead. Of course, on the actual hand, the King will turn out to be a brilliant lead. I don't expect many defenders to even consider it, so those West players who take a chance in 3NT will often be well rewarded with +430 or better.

Pass1NTAll pass

If the North hand were a little weaker, I might open it 1 for lead directing purposes, but 1 will be the choice at most tables. A 1 opening will keep E/W out of the bidding, and N/S are likely to end up in 1NT. Even if you are a big fan of raising partner's major suit response with only three card support, the North hand isn't right for it. With a 4333 hand and poor s, bidding 1NT looks normal. Similarly, South doesn't have the right sort of hand to correct 1NT to 2. With stopper help in all the unbid suits and a poor five card suit, 1NT should look like an appealing contract to South, particularly at matchpoints. As it happens, neither 1NT nor 2 will play particularly well for N/S. East will likely lead a against 1NT. Declarer does best to win the Ace and lead a . West might go up with the Ace and continue s. If so, the blockage in s will ensure that declarer can escape for down one. If West ducks the , East is in danger of being later endplayed to give up an extra trick. It turns out the best defense is for East to start with two rounds of s and then switch to a , but this is unlikely, and E/W will do well if they are able to get their full eight tricks on defense against 1NT. Only seven tricks are available to the defense against 3, but the defense is a lot easier, so overall 2 is a worse contract for N/S than 1NT. I expect +50 and +100 to be the most common scores for E/W and a lot of matchpoints will ride on whether a N/S declarer goes down one or two tricks wherever they end up.

Pass3All pass

7222 hands are really awful for preempting, and I wouldn't blame anyone for opening 1 with the West hand. Most, however, will open 3 and East will have a choice to make. When your partner has preempted and you have a fit, there are basically three possibilities. If you have a good enough hand to think that game will have play, you should obviously raise your partner or make another forcing bid. If you have a weak hand, you should also raise your partner, furthering the preempt. If you have an intermediate hand, both raising and passing are options to consider. The East hand here is a good example. Holding a fit, and limited defense outside of the suit, East knows that N/S have a likely making contract in s, quite possibly a game. However, East also has 10 HCP, so assuming West has 6-8 HCP, the opponents might not have enough HCP to compete, particularly since they will have to bid at the three level and are vulnerable. Notice on the actual hand that South doesn't have a certain bid over 3, and if South had a second low , would be likely to just pass the hand in 3. On this particular hand, 3 and 3 will both make, so passing in the East hand will work out well if South passes it out, or N/S bid to 4, but will not work out as well if N/S land in 3 as shown in the bidding. If East bids 4 right away, they will likely play in that contract, but getting doubled is unlikely. The one thing East should not do is pass originally and then bid 4 over 3. The reason for this is that N/S are much more likely to double 4 if East bids this way. As E/W are vulnerable and 4 will be off one, getting doubled will be a disaster. -200 will be a near bottom for E/W as few pairs will be in 4 making for N/S.
