Pass2All pass

North opens 1 in 1st seat and none of the other players at the table are happy about it. East is unhappy because he can't open 1 and doesn't have the shape for a takeout double (unless you play Equal Level Conversion Doubles). Some might consider a 2 call, but the diamond suit is too weak to emphasize here so East should pass. South is unhappy because he has a singleton in partner's suit which takes a lot of the value out of his hand; if partner had opened 1 this hand would be almost game forcing. South bids 1NT (which I prefer to play as semi-forcing). West is unhappy because his five-card heart suit doesn't seem so good anymore so he passes. North, unaware of the misery around the table, rebids 2. East might consider an aggressive double, but doesn't know that the opponents have a fit which makes this risky. South passes, taking the low road at matchpoints, and West stays silent as well.

This type of auction calls for a trump lead, though I can't say I'm thrilled leading from Qx. Still, I'd probably lead the Q. The play could go a number of ways, but eight or nine tricks are likely for declarer. On this hand, it turns out that an aggressive double by East would have worked.

2Pass3All pass

I sometimes worry that calling the East hand a normal opening will cause the ghost of Charles Goren to come after me. Still, with A A K and a five-card suit, not to mention favorable vulnerability, I will risk the haunting. South has a decision that's less clear, but I advise inserting a cheap overcall when you can, assuming your hand is not too catastrophic. Having two suits is a little insurance against a possible penalty situation. West now cuebids to show support and a limit raise or better (typically 11+ total points)--figuring out the exact worth of the West hand is difficult on this auction, but it has 10 highcard points, four-card support and a singleton so it's worth at least a cuebid, regardless of the fact that it's almost the worst hand I could draw up to fit those requirements. North would like to bid, but double would show a spade card (not shortness!), not the other two suits. East has a minimum and signs off in 3, ending the auction.

South has to find a lead--a club is possible but a diamond seems safer. Some Norths might regret not doubling 2 to get the lead of ace and another spade, but that is a fantasy and a double-dummy postmortem. East might guess trump wrong since he knows that North has a singleton spade. Playing for the drop is slightly better without information, but the knowledge of the 5-1 spade break changes the odds. The contract is likely to make either nine or ten tricks.

Pass1Pass1NT
All pass

South opens 1 although if the hand had a few tens in it, I would open 1NT. This hand will not cause us headaches if we open 1, however, since we will be more than happy to bid notrump later. West could consider a light takeout double or a "four good = five bad" 1 bid, but I prefer to pass at these colors. North bids 1, East passes, and South rebids 1NT. This is where I mention the dreaded "r" word: "reverse." South would like to show his hearts, but bidding 2 would promises a much stronger hand. Additionally if North has hearts, he will show them later. After 1NT, everyone passes.

West will lead either the A or K depending on the agreement. Players spend too much time agreeing to bidding topics, "What do you bid if they interfere over our king-asking 5NT?" and too little time coming to good carding agreements. Against NT, it's important to know which lead asks partner for attitude and which for count (or unblock). I like to play ace is for attitude and king for count since alliteration/consonance helps me remember. Which do you want here? Attitude. You would like to know if partner has Qxx or xxx. Declarer will probably end up with five diamond tricks and two clubs, but it's possible that a misplay by a defender allows for extra tricks.

Larry Cohen Hand Analysis
WestNorthEastSouth
Pass1Pass1
Pass2Pass2
All pass

I open most balanced 12's but jacks are overrated and I have no good spots, vulnerable, so I'm showing a pass for West. True, there are two four-card majors, but maybe I'm getting more conservative--or disciplined. North might open 1NT but bidding diamonds and then clubs is a better description of this hand. After 1 East might consider a 1 call, but to make a vulnerable overcall, you should have either a good suit or a good hand and this is neither. South is too good to make a weak jump-shift so starts with 1. North now bids 2 and South bids 2. The opponents remain out of the later rounds for the same reasons they stayed quiet early.

West has no happy leads, and might choose a club. Lots of different things could happen. It feels like most paths will lead to making 2 or more, but declarer might get tangled up along the way.

Larry Cohen Hand Analysis
WestNorthEastSouth
 1Pass3
Pass3NTAll pass

I've shown an auction using my preferred method of a jump-response in a lower-ranking 3-level suit as natural and invitational. Without this treatment, South's hand is hard to bid (2 GF ? 1NT then clubs? Yuk and Yuk). Please don't tell Marty Bergen that I eschew Bergen raises, or if you do, tell him David Berkowitz made me. With clubs 2-2 6 makes and would also have made with a singleton 10 in West so it's not a terrible contract, but needs a bit of luck. It's possible that after North bids 3NT South might retreat to 4 which may result in 5 which is probably the best game. That said, 3NT at matchpoints is never a terrible guess.

In 3NT, East will lead a spade and North should try to set up the clubs. Life is easy when East is the hand that has to lead spades. If the E-W hands were reversed, 3NT would go down with 6 still making.
