Should West rebid 2 or 1NT? 2 is certainly possible, but who wants to play minor suit part scores unless at the last resort?

2 looks a bit risky, and there is no guarantee that East has even a tolerance for hearts. 1NT seems best with respectable diamonds for notrump lay and a probable assist in clubs.

What will North lead? Spades is usually a really bad lead in notrump contracts when the suit has been bid on your left (dummy). The main issue is that the lead from some broken honors is likely to run around to declarer's minor honor or high spot card. Well, that does not happen on this deal, but if dummy's jack is played at trick one, a reasonable play, the result of the lead is not overwhelming. Having done that damage, however, NS might be well advised to develop two spade tricks by leading them again later.

120 to EW is a good score, the best they are entitled to according to the computers. And that is why notrump is a preferred landing spot to the 2 contract which makes the same number of tricks, but scores only 90. It is upon this scoring dichotomy that matchpoint bidding prefers notrump.

  1. Transfer to diamonds

Four-way transfers are justifiably popular, but be sure to have a six-card suit when you employ it, and preferably with a real reason to get out of notrump, i.e., a singleton in some side suit and a good topping -- an ace is adequate, for the sake of control, else a couple of honors would be nice.

3 might actually make more often than not, for the auction does not exactly call for the winning heart lead away from the AJ6, does it? Nor from the black queens. Indeed, a trump lead might be the most popular choice from the north hand. If Declarer can guess clubs, eleven tricks will come home!!! Six diamonds and five clubs.

Results all over the place.

No clue to go to game here, but south has 6-5 distribution and will surely bid a lot as a passed hand -- the original pass effectively takes the handcuffs off.

  1. Fourth suit forcing.

West's bidding suggests/promises an unbalanced hand containing nine or more cards in the minors. East should evaluate his ace of spades as a key control card and his minor honors as made of solid gold, when combined via the alchemy of the club fit. Hence, an upgrade to a game forcing auction should be highly praised. West awaits developments by promising five clubs, hence at least five diamonds, and East's 4 is clearly game forcing and fit-promising. Then West should show his outside control, a much more important Feature than the K. East can now show his power by control-bidding his ace, no doubt an ace in this context, by the way, for only crystalline honors should matter in a slam auction. West cannot now bid Minorwood, so the default 4NT 1430 Roman Keycard Blackwood must be employed. "3!" cries East, and WEst settles for the small slam. Making all thirteen tricks is easy, but only after the two hands are compared and the diamond suit distribution between north and south is revealed.

Bidding six and making seven should produce 70% or more of the matchpoints.

Craig Hemphill Hand Analysis

Slam on this board is simply a matter of luck: guess the Q and rake in the matchpoints.

3NT is probably the choice contract, eleven tricks off the top without a finesse being the likely result after a spade lead from North. A club lead from South will give declarer time to guess hearts without risking the contract.

No advice on how to resolve the guess. Just guess and live with the luck you select.
