East opens 1 with a very powerful hand for playing in a suit. South might consider bidding, but his hand is too light for 1 and 2 would be too reckless for my taste. West can start by bidding 1 and East should bid 1. Players tend to fall in love with hands like East, but if you don't have a fit with partner, the hand loses a lot of its value. While 1 is non-forcing, it is unlikely to end the auction. I like taking the low road as West with 1NT--partner opened white at matchpoints and could certainly have only 11 or 12 points. East could pattern out with 2 to try to find a slam, but I would bid a practical 3NT. I can hear my partner David Berkowitz calling me a truck driver for this bid, but I wouldn't like to bid 2 and then see a diamond led against our eventual 3NT. For those treating the double dummy as gospel, yes 6 can make, but you would not want to be in it.

North should lead a spade and declarer will take the first 11 tricks when clubs split.

Today's players like to open light in third seat, but the pile of dreck held by West doesn't warrant any sort of call. North's hand is 21 HCP with a five-card suit and some might choose to upgrade it to a 2 opener (planning on rebidding 2NT). South will use Stayman . Certain players might play a convention called Puppet Stayman here, but I am not a huge fan over 2NT opening bids without some extensive discussions. All paths should lead to the same end point as the South hand with a nice looking five-card suit headed by an ace should force to game opposite 2NT or 2-2-2NT. Either version of Stayman will result in playing in 3NT.

I am a simple opening leader--I lead fourth from my longest and strongest. On a low club lead, declarer will win the K and play theK and run theJ losing to the queen. The standard return for West is his original fourth-best (the 7) but West can see a potential blockage in the suit and should return the Q. On the 8 East will know the club position and wait until the 7 to take his A and win the last club. I suspect East-West pairs may wind up tangling their tricks resulting in a making contract.

South has a normal modern-day opening bid. North has a normal 2 bid. East has the wrong shape to come in directly and West has the wrong colors to balance, so I have shown an auction that upsets me. I don't like to let my opponents play on the 2-level when they have an 8-card fit--but honestly, that's what I would do here.

Declarer faces a ton of guesses, and is most unlikely to make the 10 tricks that can be taken double dummy. If West does balance with 3 (and partner doesn't hang him by raising), declarer can get out for down one and a decent score.

Another normal modern-day light opening followed by a game-forcing 2. Many use 2 as the default rebid, but I prefer that to show six spades. I have no qualms about bidding out my shape with 3 (not promising extras). South supports with 3 (showing more values than 4), and although North has two aces, he goes low (terrible trumps are the first thing to consider in slam auctions).

With good diamonds likely to come in dummy, East should try to make an aggressive lead (away from an honor) rather than a passive one (trump). His best attack is a low heart. The defense easily gets two red tricks, but that should be all.

Most players would probably open 1, but I prefer 1 intending to rebid 2 over partner's 1 bid. Over either minor-suit opening, East overcalls 1 and South has a practical 2NT (invitational) bid. West has a great hand for hearts, but on this auction, 3 seems enough. North has good trick-taking potential (and probably not much defense against hearts), so goes to 3NT.

After the normal heart lead, declarer is down one, losing four hearts and a club. 5 is probably the best game contract, but that has problems too--especially on a spade lead.

Some East-West's might buy it in hearts where the play is complex.
