This auction could go a number of ways depending on style. North might open 1, East might open 2 (the 1098 of diamonds are the reason to consider this) and South might pass in 3rd seat. That said, I've shown the auction that would happen if I were sitting at all three seats today. I might have a different auction if I picked tomorrow. After 1, West has enough for a takeout double even with the revolting QJ of clubs. North should still bid 1 even though your RHO has shown some spades. East knows that her side has a nine-card fit and should bid 2. South has bid enough and so has West. North now shows her club support by bidding 3. East follows the LAW of Total Tricks and bids 3 with a 9-card fit. North doesn't want to defend three diamonds and tries 4. Those partnerships playing Support Doubles will have a safer knowledge that South will have a decent club fit since South's pass of 2 will deny having three spades.

4 is not exactly a laydown (the location of the J is favorable) but with 10 trumps, and the A onside South shouldn't have any problems taking 10 tricks.

East picks up a hand with 17HCP and a nice five-card suit, but you shouldn't get yourself locked into a hand evaluation when you pick up your hand. How good a hand is, especially a hand with lots of shape, will depend on how the auction proceeds. If partner bids diamonds, how happy would you be? Regardless, we know that we'll start with 1 and see what develops. West should definitely bid, and she should not bid diamonds but hearts. This style of bidding is known as Walsh style and it prioritizes showing majors as the responder with only one bid (not enough points to reverse later). Walsh style allows the opening bidder to rebid notrump with balanced hands. A 1 response might get East excited, but the location of honors matters. If theA was in hearts, I might jump to four, but at matchpoints and with such poor trump, a 3 bid seems high enough, this is one of those "3 and a half" heart bids.

The lie of the cards is very fortunate for declarer who can manage to lose only one spade and one heart. On a diamond lead, declarer should win in dummy and play a trump to the K. Now declarer has to guess what to do--ruffing a diamond and playing another heart might work (although it could be bad if your North was good enough to hold up on the first round of trump). Playing for Ax by leading a low trump out of hand could be right (and might be safer). With the hearts behaving and spade entries all paths should lead to a lot of tricks.

On board 2, I mentioned the importance of the location of honors. This South hand is another example--if you blindly think of a weak two-bid as "5-10 points and a six-card suit" you might open 2. Please don't. While we are well past the days of needing "two of the top three honors" or "three out of the top five" to preempt, you should still be telling partner about a suit that doesn't embarrass you. K109xxx is a reasonable suit or Q1098xx, but 976543 is NOT. West opens 1 and North overcalls 1 not worrying about the other major. East has a hand that is too good for a simple raise, so should cuebid to show a good hand in support of diamonds. South has nothing to add and West is reasonably happy about diamonds, but can't like the looks of the QJ of hearts so she might show a minimum by bidding 3 (if she cooperates with 3, East should probably sign off in 3). That will likely end the auction.

South will lead partner's heart suit. This is another hand where the double-dummy shows that diamonds should be held to nine tricks, but real defenders will likely allow more. The play of the club suit is interesting--low to the ace and low towards the Q109 results in a guess. Better is to play for South to have one of the honors. If you lead the 10 (or Q) and run it, you will take three tricks in the suit if South has the K or the J.

Michael Berkowitz Hand Analysis
WestNorthEastSouth
1PassPassDbl
3PassPassDbl
Pass3All pass

West opens 1 and North and East both pass. South has a big hand and a good shape for a takeout double. West has a good enough hand to jump-rebid 3. Two more passes and South's hand is worth another double. Now North might consider passing, but the heart spots (non-honor cards) are bad and Wests are always 7-4 when I choose to pass. With four spades, bidding 3 seems reasonable. South and West have both bid enough and that will likely be our final contract.

East will lead a heart and then West will win the ace and be unhappy. She can try the K to see if partner might be about to ruff a club, but partner should discourage. Now nothing seems great and she might try a trump or just cashing out her clubs. Declarer doesn't have the entries to take a spade finesse so will pick up the QJ. After a club honor is cashed, declarer should play on clubs to pitch diamonds from her hand. Ultimately, the play will be complicated and likely different at each table. The double dummy of 4 seems unlikely but on hands like this anything could happen.

If North had chosen to pass 3 doubled, the North-South pair would collect 200 and a likely good score.

Michael Berkowitz Hand Analysis

 PassPassPass
1NTPass3NTAll pass

I would never open the North hand, but I might open the East hand on some days. The favorable vulnerability could goad me to do it, but we'll display what I think is the majority action (pass). Third seat is a good time to be aggressive, but red against white and with no good suit, South passes. West bids 1NT and East, if they play Puppet Stayman (a way of finding if opener has a 5-card major) can bid that or bid 3NT otherwise.

North has an annoying lead. After 1NT-3NT, I prefer to lead a major. On this hand you know that partner isn't going to have much (5 points assuming the opponents have 25) so you might try being very passive and leading a club. You might also hope that leading a diamond (fourth best) might be the best chance to beat the contract. The lead winds up determining whether the contract makes or goes down one. I don't think I would lead a diamond, but hats off to you if you did.
