Only West has the makings of an opening bid, of course, but North can double 1 for takeout with full pride. East happily mentions his excellent heart suit, scoffing at North's double, and South makes a nuisance bid of 2, expecting North's black suits to be better than his hearts. West should make a Support Double(s) , showing three hearts, providing East with an option, should the heart suit have been more an adventure than serious, when 2 would have a chance at being a resting place. But 2 will be bid with confidence, and that will end the auction, nine tricks to East-West and that should be about average.

Notice that West ought not overcall at the two level with a rotten hand and a questionable five card suit, and that punishment awaits should he venture out. A Negative Double by North would be passed, and 500 would be a fair judgment for the trespass.

Doubling 1NT when that bid clearly shows 18-19 HCP, as here, leads to tricky defense, tottering on the edge of disaster. Bidding 2 has North's stamp of approval, and plus 140 should prove adequate, and easily achieved, all of the missing high cards being well placed for North-South's needs.

Plus 140 should not be hard to attain, but likely will be of significant worth for having ventured into the fray.

The use of 4th suit forcing to game (3) finds North unwilling to bid 3NT, and South should steer toward the major suit game in his excellent six-bagger. Losing two clubs and one spade is an inevitability, but so what? Plus 620 for the best possible score should be above average.

Playing Support Doubles give aid and comfort to South, who will KNOW that a raise to 2 after a takeout double promises four hearts. With three, North would redouble, showing that number precisely.

Twelve tricks can be made rather easily by drawing trumps and then playing clubs -- ace first, then small, covering the second honor, and the 9 takes a trick, an unusual promotion of a non-honor after just two rounds of a suit. Just one club to lose.

Bridge is an easy game.

It is not easy to admire a jump rebid of 3 with so many queens and jacks, but at least the spade queen is apparently working, and the heart suit is a source of pride. If you squint hard, you can find merit in the diamond fragment, where honors are at least congregated. A tad of an overbid is good for the soul sometimes.

Not the time for a weak jump shift, vulnerable, but some will make that call, so let's showcase the downside of preempting into a suit advertised by an opponent.

South, you should have listened!

How about down three. Does that seem reasonable? 300 to EW.

13 opposite 10 HCP. Why would anyone get to a notrump game? Well, just because every single card is well placed, NS can make ten tricks in notrump. Resulters will want to know what went wrong, but the real question is how can so much go right?

A bad hand, a nine card suit, and favorable vulnerability?

PREEMPT!!

By the way, it is the par result.

Not many will take the ten tricks foreseen by the computer, but after AKx, a heart can be discarded on the Q, one heart ruffed, and the J passed, for ten tricks, when the Q and the remarkably important 8 tumble doubleton!

Another game that should not be bid makes, with careful play.

South had a mind to opening 4 in the first place, but thought it would be too likely to miss SLAM! That idea went South quickly when North passed and East doubled. But without any defense and with a firm resolve to dive into the abyss, South annoys East by bidding game!

So much annoyance that East doubles again, this time with no expectation of its being pulled. Not that West would think it appropriate, but it turns out that bidding 5 would have been the winning call. Who knew? Who could know?

East will be seething for days when 4 doubled makes -- easily, at that! Just drat trumps and lead a heart toward the king, South being willing to bet the mortgage that this particular finesse will work!
