West employs the Unusual notrump -- in this case a jump to 2NT that can have no natural use -- to designate, first, the approximate distribution of the hand, and then, by raising East's preference, a statement of strength. East, with a good diamond fit (being forced to take a preference between two suits does not guarantee actual length), and an ace, takes in upon himself to raise to game -- not much strength, you say? Well, the retort is that West's bidding shows nearly a monster hand. An ace and a fit is enough opposite West's power-packed sequence.

Probably fewer than one quarter of the EW pairs will actually bid to five diamonds unless pushed, so plus 400 will be an excellent result. No doubles seem justified on this auction by North or South -- if 5 is wrong, the difference between plus 50 and plus 100 will be insignificant, but if 5 makes, a double risks an absolute bottom!

Now, if 2 happens to be an artificial Game Force ("third suit forcing"), then South would have to bid 3, for diamonds would not really have been bid. Then North would bid 3NT.

Somebody will bid notrump rather than reside in spades. When the Q drops, there are a lot of tricks.

The bidding gets less than clear after the second round raise to 3. South cannot bid 3NT because of the singleton club, So shows a heart stopper. North, with a bit of heart help and lots of club help, bids game in notrump.

If West leads a heart, declarer desperately needs the diamond finesse. Phew!

Is East's 3 bid forcing? East might worry, but what else to do? West does not care -- four card heart support is forcing the right decision.

Had the vulnerability been favorable, South would have trotted out 5, but that big red stripe silences him.

When the heart finesse works, East isn't that surpriesed. What is surprising is that West opened 2, after all, with bad spades and four hearts. . . ..

Let's see -- if West passed as most would, North would open 1 and East would probably double, preparing to bid hearts to show the "big overcall." South would pass and West would bid 1, hoping to get hearts in later. Well, whether North rebids clubs or not, hearts are coming from East, and West would be intolerably pessimistic to do anything less than bid 4 after that sequence.

The falling K makes the slam easy. Few will bid the slam, maybe less than 10% of the field.

South stole the EW suit! Not intentionally, just doing the right thing and getting an unexpected bonus.

Making eight tricks in diamonds will be normal fare.

South bids hearts twice after denying four card support to show good quality and poor diamonds -- notrump not a suitable destination. With heart quality assured, and no wastage in diamonds, the auction screams for 5. 4 is lucky, requiring establishment of the club suit while enduring diamond ruffs in the long hand, ultimately being forced into a Dummy Reversal what works because the East hand, with menacing trumps, is tamed by countering the diamond onslaught with a club suit counter. Quite fascinating, actually, watching the punch and counter punch of each side's long suit against the opponents' trump holding.

The 3 bid might seem exuberant to some, but game has already been forced and trumps agreed, so why not? The two club honors have gained in importance by East's 2 bid.

The fortuitous spade distribution overcomes the club problem, but clubs must be tackled before drawing the last trump, Declarer can afford to lose the club finesse, still counting to twelve tricks.

  1. Jacoby 2NT -- four card support, game forcing.
  2. Singleton diamond.

According to Easley Blackwood, the partner with second and third round controls is the one who should inquire about aces -- that would be South. The purpose of 3 is to test North's interest in slam, allowing a weak North hand to signal a lack of slam interest. Instead, 4 signals interrest. Now South has the green light. Asking for aces, the king of trumps, and the queen of trumps fills in the complete picture. All of those factors are discernible through 1430 Roman Keycard Blackwood .

5 showed zero or three key cards, clearly three, not zero, and that left for South the problem of the trump quality. 5 asked for the queen of trumps and North showed it by bidding 6, but denying a side suit king. Perfect!

Well, almost. There is that lurking problem of the trump jack. After winning the opening lead, declarer plays a trump to the king, losing. Now do you follow the adage, "eight ever, nine never" or finesse against West's hypothetical J62? Here there is no real reason to vary from the basis for the adage -- when West follows to the second trump, play dummy's top honor and make your slam. The false view that 3-1 divisions are more likely than 2-2 does not play a role here, for half of the 3-1 divisions incorporate EAST's holding three, and that is not possible when West follows to the second spade. Follow the adage, which here is based on sound theory.

Well done, slammers.
