NS have no incentive, not to mention values, to bid. EW have no game aspirations. 1NT seems a likely popular contract.

South will no doubt lead a heart, resolving that guess for declarer (don't prematurely spend the jack). Playing on diamonds next is also rewarding bringing the total to three tricks each in diamonds and hearts, and then clubs work like clockwork (small to the nine).

TEN tricks, no less.

South finally feels comfortable bidding after two passes and the opponents' having found a fit. North should not punish partner for having essentially balanced the opponents up a notch. Those clubs take tricks on defense, as to the A and a spade trick.

NS should be happy for a plus score.

NS should almost universally play a part score in diamonds on this hand, and making four seems not to be much of a challenge. Pretty routine, but there is room for imaginative divergences.

Playing the hand and forcing an opening lead guess can offset the advantage given to the defense in making the opening salvo. A diamond lead can be costly to the defense when declarer property puts in the Curse of Scotland, trick one (9). After winning the K with the ace, a second diamond trick seems assured, but playing on clubs will set up four club tricks, a tidy number toward making the contract.

The sequence one forcing notrump followed by that player's bidding 2NT shows about 11 HCP without a major suit fit and stoppers -- THIS hand! 2NT makes, but the 120 score is exceeded by either 140 in hearts or 130 in diamonds. Seems unfair, West having bid correctly.

If East leads a spade and West puts up the king, declarer will make an obscene number of tricks -- eleven-- by leading next the Q, picking up the entire diamond suit and along the way playing clubs toward the AJT. In all, the tally will come to three spades, one heart, five diamonds, and two clubs -- "11!"

South says, "I only had six points! Did you miscount?"

Moysian fits (4-3 trump suit "fits") are not much in vogue, but are quite attractive when holding two top honors in the three card packet, along with a ruffing value to be taken in the short hand.

Note the heart contract is the maximum paying strain for NS.

East's one and only chance to compete sensibly is at the first round of bidding -- a 1 overcall is not the worst action ever taken, but West needs to scramble out to diamonds somehow.

Passing throughout seems more likely, when NS find a comfortable fit.

Comfort is not a matchpoint thing, however, and mixing it up is more likely to produce swingy results. Overcalling the East hand is recommended for action players.

2 sets a Game Force (assuming the system is 2/1) and leaves room for more description than a wooden 2 bid, for it is information that is required, and filling the club suit is more important than showing a major suit -- we already have a fit in spades.

Allowing West to bid diamonds and then raise clubs is one of the major benefits of the 2/1 system -- a slow discussion of the hand's potential and distribution pretty much guarantees that West has a singleton (or void) in hearts, along with a club honor (king. . .) So East is fully justified in asking for keycards (and the trump queen with 5), visualizing a grand if West just will own up to having her majesty, the Q).

NO?? well, then, a small slam should be makeable.

And it is so.

Craig Hemphill Hand Analysis

How embarrassing to play 2 in the North (1 2 P P P). But if North doubles and South bids 1, 2 rebid gets not much further along.

Maybe a double by North followed by a jump to 3? South would raise that, and then does 4 show spades? No. . .

Well, good luck in finding spades -- some will double and bid spades, I know, but methinks they are luckier dummy-catchers then I, a doubler followed by club-bidder, followed by spades if given a later chance by aggressive opponents.

A fair amount of chances for North to separate from the field -- and that is the essence of matchpoints. A fun hand.
