At some tables, North will open an aggressive 2, which will certainly some as a surprise to South. The loser trick count is right for a 2 opening, thanks to the side four card suit, but with only 4 HCP, I expect most to pass. If North does pass, South will open 1 and it will be North's turn to be surprised. If North opens 2, South should bid 4, and West will be put toIf a very difficult decision. If South opens the hand, as shown in the bidding, then West will either overcall 2 or show a two suited hand, North will be the one to jump to 4, and it will be East who has to decide whether to bid at the five level. Assuming West shows two suits, East will know that West has shortness in one of the minors, and that N/S likely have both a huge fit and a secondary fit in the minor. Thus, I think East can determine that both sides have significant offense and limited defense, and should bid 5, despite holding only 6 HCP. As expected, South doesn't have enough defense to double, and now North might bid 5. Certainly, neither side will be sure what is making, and I can see final contracts of 4, 5 or 5, with 5 more likely to be doubled than 5.

How will each of the major suit contracts play? A contract is easiest to analyze, as any reasonable defense and declarer play will result in the defense getting one trick in each of the side suits. A contract is a lot trickier, and much will depend on the bidding, and how strong a hand South has shown relative to North. Additionally, the defense might give information away at trick two. Let's say that East is the declarer and South leads a high . With a singleton visible in dummy, North's spot card play should be suit preference, and North should play a low one as they have limited help in s, and might get a ruff if North has a quick trump entry. Which will South lead? If they lead a small one, it will make it easier for declarer to work out that s aren't 2-2 and later take a finesse. Switching to the 10 might be effective at fooling some declarers. Worst case for E/W is that South switches to the 10, declarer takes a losing finesse, and then goes up with the other high when South continues the suit, watching it get ruffed. With two losers still to come in the minors, declarer will have five losers total. Best case for E/W is that declarer works out based on the bidding to play for the King to drop and also to finesse for the Queen, to make 11 tricks. If you played that way to make 5, you should be congratulated for a well deserved top.

Pass4All pass

N/S should be bidding 4 on this hand, as North has a good enough hand to bid game once South raises in s. West has a normal 1 opening bid. North is close to having enough strength to double and then bid s, but the suit is too short and too weak to show this hand as a one suiter. Far better is to bid 1, and then later to double to show extra strength. (For example, if East were to raise to 2 and this got passed around to North, they should double this.) On the actual hand, East will pass and South will raise to 2. At this favorable vulnerability, West might venture a 3 bid, despite not holding much strength opposite a passing partner, but it won't matter, as East has no fit for either of West's suit. Whether West bids again or not, North should bid 4, especially knowing that West is likely to hold most of the HCP if finesses are needed (a possibility in all four suits.) Notice that the North hand would be much worse if East had opened the bidding, and held West's cards.

The defense is unlikely to lead a trump, so at least one of declarer's finesses will be taken care of at trick one, but even on a trump lead, declarer should be able to make 10 tricks with careful play. A lead gives declarer the most difficulty. West can win the Ace and continue with a high . Now declarer is in a little bit of danger if they aren't careful. For example, if declarer takes two rounds of trump and leads a , West can win the Ace, cash their other high with East pitching a and then give East a ruff. Declarer does better to take the finesse, rather than the finesse. With the Queen onside, it won't matter whether declarer has cashed two or three rounds of trump before leading a . In fact, the Queen falling singleton will mean declarer can still prevail even if they take the finesse towards the King after drawing three rounds of trump. As long as declarer doesn't give up a ruff, they should be able to make 10 tricks, and I expect +620 to be a common score.

  1. shortness, slam interest in s

Although some experts pairs might be able to get to the cold grand slam on this hand, just getting to slam at all should be a great score for E/W. South is too strong to open 2 and will start with 1. West sill have to decide whether to double or bid 1NT. If the Jack were the Queen, then I think 1NT would be clear, and if it were a low , then doubling would be obvious. The Jack makes it less clear. My personal preference would be to double, as I dislike bidding 1NT with minimal values, no source of tricks and not a clear double stopper, particularly at this vulnerability. East will of course be rather shocked that West has doubled showing both majors, and will be suspicious that West actually has a strong one suiter. Either way, East should start with a 2 cue bid, both to find the best major suit fit and to start exploring for slam. West will dutifully show their four card major suit, and now East will be definitely interested in slam in s, if West has a control. (After all, a small slam will have play opposite as little as the King, four small s and the Ace.)

The problem for East is that they need to find out if West has s controlled, then they want to ask for keycards but excluding the suit. Most pairs will have no chance to do this. Almost no pairs will be able to do this. (If a 3 bid by East would be a cue bid for s, then I can see how you might accomplish this, but most pairs won't have any idea what 3 would mean on this sequence.) I see two realistic options for East. The first is to just ask for keycards, and if West happens to show all three missing Aces and the King, bid the grand, otherwise, if East shows two Aces, bid the small slam, hoping that West has the King if they don't have the Ace. The other alternative for East is to bid as shown, showing their void, and implying a strong trump suit. This second approach has a chance to work on the actual hand, as it isn't at all unreasonable for West to bid the grand once East shows a void and interest in a grand slam. In practice, neither player will be able to bid a grand with confidence, and in fact, I suspect that many will just be in game. Of course, it turns out that West has everything East needs, and 13 tricks will be easy, so getting to at least a small slam is the key to a good score.
