AiB Team - Robert Todd and Theri Andino Hand Analysis

**This set of analyses is written by Theri alone this week.

North passes and East opens 1. South passes as well, so West answers with a (semi-)forcing 1NT. East rebids 2 and West takes a preference to 2, so then East can go ahead and get excited about his hand and bid 4.
This should work out well, and in fact the defense will have to lead fairly early on to preserve their trick there (although that's not hard for South to do.) Then declarer loses 1, 1, and 1.

AiB Team - Robert Todd and Theri Andino Hand Analysis

East opens 1, which South passes, and so West starts with 1 since he's too strong to go straight to 3NT (which is where he likely suspects this is going anyway, but that jump is usually defined as 13-15 pts from Responder.) North might have entertained a 2 bid at different colors, but should pass here, and so East gets to rebid 1 with his unbalanced hand. West bids whatever number of counts as 4th Suit Game Forcing (by partnership agreement) and then East can pattern out with 3 (or 2 if that fits.) West can place East as 1435 now (most likely) and so it's time to claim NT if he decides that's as far as this is going to protect his K, and jumping now that they're in a game forcing auction will show his extra strength. 3NT it is, and East is fine with that.
It turns out to be very important that West play this NT (if East were to play it, South could lead the Q - admittedly hard to find - and then declarer has no stopper at all.) But here, declarer gets 5, 4, and 2 (and 1 if the defense leads them and gives it to him!) Note that some minor suit slams also make, but would have the same lead vulnerability if played from East, as it would be in this potential auction.

AiB Team - Robert Todd and Theri Andino Hand Analysis

South opens 1 and West could technically overcall 1NT, but this seems like a shaky red bid, so he might double instead (or even pass, but that feels like it's just kicking the can down the road - he's likely to need to bid at some point with 15 HCP.) In either case, North raises - if West bid 1NT, he might just bid 2 (although might also seriously entertain doubling for penalty), but if West doubled, North could look at this as closer to a limit raise and redouble to start. In the now 1NTX auction, East probably tries a XX to run to , and then NS wind up in some number of . In the 1 (X) XX auction, East picks 2, South passes, and then North goes back to . So it feels like a NS partscore at most tables.
That's fine - declarer has a pretty big hint to the location of the missing values, especially when East shows up with the A, and so loses just 1 and 1, and then in the process of pulling trump/trying to deal with losing , 2 more losers.

AiB Team - Robert Todd and Theri Andino Hand Analysis

West opens 1 and North overcalls 1. East has an odd kind of middle hand - if he had some shortness anywhere, 4 would be an easy call, but here it's probably still what he needs to bid. And that does make South's decision harder - South would have preferred to be able to make a limit raise, but now has to decide whether to bid game or not when partner was just a 1-level overcall. If he believes East's "weak" bid, he can probably put partner on a full overcall and take a chance on 4, but this is a tough decision for both East and South.
Taking a chance would be right - and as soon as East is shown to hold the AK, finding the rest of the missing cards should be relatively easy. Declarer loses 1, 1, and 1.

AiB Team - Robert Todd and Theri Andino Hand Analysis

North opens 1, which East passes. South bids 1, and West pops in with 2. North passes with the minimum and not even 3-card support, and East does something like a 2 cuebid in support of . If South has room, he bids 2, and then West competes to 3, and that seems like it's the end of everyone's steam.
South is probably a little surprised when North leads the A and continues another one, but then tricks for the defense fall off a little and they just get 1. If, however, North had led a small to start, he could stop the declarer from being able to ruff the 3rd round of and get one more defensive trick there.

East passes and South opens 3. West passes and North just makes the expedient 4 bid (really great hand, but partner would have to be exactly perfect for this to make a slam.)
Indeed, West gets his two Aces, but that's it, even with the slightly nasty trump break.

South opens 1 and West overcalls 2. North splinters into 4, East bids 4 (at least, maybe 5), and so South retreats back to 4, his hopes dashed. (If he has to decide about bidding over 5, that's harder - he probably passes and lets North decide, and North probably goes for 5.)
Those are a lovely thing though, and declarer loses just the 1 and 1.

West opens 1 and North overcalls 2 (getting in the way as much as possible.) That leaves East to start with a double since he doesn't have enough values to make a forcing bid, and South bumps to 3. West, hoping that double was really , bids 3, which East likely raises to game. NS let them have it there.
It turns out that all the honors are in the pocket, so all declarer has to lose is the 1!
