What to do? With nine highs, a five card minor, and a spot card or two, bidding 3NT seems normal from the North side, despite the singleton club.

It isn't the singleton club that collapses the ship, though -- it is the running hearts and club ace that can be cashed by the defense. And so they should. West should lead a heart honor, not fourth best, of course, and when the suit runs, East, by chance, has the fourth heart trick and can simply lay the A gently on the table. Down one.

An "imaginative" lead of the 7 or 6 will allow the leaky boat to get to port. Five diamonds and four spades. EW will be discarding a winner on trick nine.

Lead from strength.

A limit raise leads to a simple game auction, and that leaves it to declarer to take ten tricks. Playing the trump suit is not at all automatic -- the correct play is to lead low toward the AJxxx to insert the jack. That protects against South's holding the singleton K, when leading the queen would promote North's Txx into a trick. When the correct play fetches the T from North, declarer has a clear path by leading back to the East hand with a spade NOW to advance the Q for the "proven" finesse.

Some west players might find a reason to open the balanced 11-count, but they are on their own. North would overcall 1 and then the heart suit is easily found for NS.

The given auction is actually harder to achieve NS, for South might pass the 1NT "semi-forcing" response by a passed hand.

Game?? No, not bidding any games here.

  1. "Drury," showing about a limit raise in spades. The fourth trump and various plus factors make the choice reasonable.

Slam is not a bad proposition at all, but does depend heavily on finding her majesty, the queen of trump, and "something else." That something is the reason not to embark on slam here.

Even if East had upgraded to open 1NT, West has no greater ambitions than game, after testing first for a 4-4 spade fit.

A couple of diamond finesses sets up that suit for five tricks, and toying with clubs fails to find the Q onside, but that's enough to assure eleven tricks.

  1. 2 is a waiting bid, listening before acting, when there is nothing generally to be proud of.
  2. Three reasons -- usually bid the higher of two touching five card suits, bid the stronger suit, and 3 is an artificial double negative!
  3. Zero or three key cards.

The spade suit should be enough to discard losing clubs, if the Q drops less than fourth, else a club finesse along with a well-positioned A might be necessary.

Many lines are possible -- on a club lead, disdain the finesse, but when the J falls from North, play to discard hearts on the spade suit, losing just one club.

  1. Jacoby Transfer

You can't always bid to the perfect spot, but sometimes the less perfect spot gains! Only a club lead from North sets up three club tricks and the A for four tricks -- Yes, yes, it is "fourth from your longest and strongest," but this is also matchpoints, so some will be going for "safe leads" like the 7, allowing ten easy tricks plus a club issue.

4 is better, but only because of the club lead against 3NT. BOTH contracts suffer from and depend on, the position of the defenders' club honors.

Today the sun is shining for declarer.
