Not many hands these days are so short and sweet, but all actions, including the passes, seem well-advised. Astonishingly, to one of the EW pair's best contracts. Wonder where the field will find anything else to do?

But don't count on a flat board! Imagination runs rampant, and the defense must be a bit careful.

The J in East's hand and the T in dummy ensure that nine tricks will come home, losing two spades, a club, and a heart. What else is there to do by North, after winning the Q, trick one, other than to shift to a heart?

East gives a "courtesy" raise, but North should object with a double. South overtakes the K, cashes three rounds, and shifts to a club. West had better rise with the ace, else south gets a ruff for an extra undertrick.

In response to a takeout double, you are "supposed to" jump with 9-11 HCP and a four card or longer major suit. But the KQ are devalued -- cards in the opponent's suit will not carry full weight. Downgrade.

North might take a shot at 2 here at the point of inquiry, but what if South is heartless? Better to try a less-than-ideal 2 contract.

Plus scores are good at matchpoints, they say. West has an awkward lead, so help is probably on the way.

2NT!Pass3All pass

The Unusual notrump overcall makes an effective belated appearance. Not all bids are appropriate at all times. After South's 1 opening bid (marginal), West has no reasonable bid. Double might well fetch a heart bid from East -- on another day. So pass is best.

After North raises and South passes, it is incumbent on West to act, not giving in to opponents who have a fit when holding a decent hand with a purposeful call.

2NT cannot be a notrump overcall, so it is a request for partner to bid a minor suit. East is more than delighted, with six clubs and two minor honors. But not too much -- that K5 is virtually worthless. 3.

South has nothing further to say, nor West, having done his duty. But North might act again, with a long heart suit. That is the only positive, however, for the spades are topless and the diamonds are more defensive than offensive. Any bid by North would be with the expectation of minimizing the negative score, not achieving a positive. The LAW of Total Tricks doe not suggest bidding on.

But there will be those who bull on, as well as West players who double to early. The results will be well-scattered.

It will be hard for EW to achieve a plus score, despite their 23 HCP. At least in theory. In practice, the defense must be accurate to prevail. A diamond lead, for example, helps declarer enough to prevail.

A club lead from North might seem too risky, but works very, very well. A heart lead would be fairly attractive, and gives nothing away. When South gets in with the A, a club should be returned, and then The defense gets all of its tricks -- down one.

If declarer plays on diamonds early on to take three diamonds, then North will have a diamond winner when cashing out the clubs. East needs the 8 rather than the 7 to make the hand.

Down one.

Passing out 2 turns out to be the winner, based on the prevailing vulnerability, but East should not be blamed -- how can he possibly know about West's distribution and club honors?

Play North for the A, and an obligatory finesse to make this hand (low to the K, then duck a diamond around, felling the A doubleton).

How can the North hand possibly be evaluated? 2 surely is conservative, but if South has diamond honors (likely), they will be wasted. Further, the heart suit may not be robust, and the spade suit is a huge question. North should raise but let South take the aggressive position toward game. And South should not.

To make the game, the T must be negotiated, the J negotiated, and the clubs well-managed.

There will be plus 110s, 140s, and 420s, depending on opening leads and other factors. 12 HCP opposite 11 will not too frequently result in game, methinks.
