North passes to start. Opening the East hand is the sort of bid I'll look back on as a "youthful indiscretion". If A, A, K is an opening, then surely A, AQ, and a J is fine to open with some 9s thrown in for luck. This is a partnership style issue, and I probably wouldn't open vulnerable, but some might. If East had passed then South would open in 3rd seat, but I wouldn't get involved as South in a live auction with this collection. If you forced me to bid, I might choose 1 rather than 2. West responds 1 and North might have thoughts of 1 dance through her head, but probably passes. East bids 1NT and West will now use new minor Forcing to find out about the heart fit. West shows 3 hearts by bidding hearts the second time around. Now West's 4 bid is a Splinter in support of hearts. If you switched East's club and spade holdings, East would be thrilled, but as it is, she signs off in 4. West, who has seen partner's opening bids before, wisely stops in 4. Trusting partner when they choose not to cooperate for slam is important, particularly when you are hoping to bid a slam based more on distribution than high card values. West was excited about the double-fit, but we can see the spade situation and West should foresee that problem.

4 looks destined to make 5 on any lead as long as declarer doesn't take a practice finesse in clubs. While the club finesse would technically allow declarer to make an extra overtrick (assuming the defense didn't start by cashing two spades) if it works, it's not worth the risk on a 50-50 proposition. If the E-W pair finds an unlikely 6, it would take a spade lead to defeat the contract. Some experts (my father and his longtime partner/my boss, Larry Cohen , in particular) love bidding 4-4 or 5-4 minor fit slams with a side 5-3 (or 6-4) major fit since you sometimes need those long suits to pitch losers on.

High-level competitive auctions are interesting, but the end results almost always depend on some good guesswork. East opens 1 and South overcalls 1. West could make a Negative Double , but South's 1 call makes it feel like partner might have some hearts with you. QJ1098 is also a formidable suit so this hand is just enough for a 2 bid. North raises to 2 and East has too much to simply raise to 3 (which would not be forcing) so jumps to 4. There's a joke that 4 by the opponents is really just a transfer to 4. At these colors, bidding 4 is riskier, but South thinks there's a chance that 4 is making so she should try. West doubles, hoping to stop partner from bidding 5.

West now has to make a lead. The Q is pretty attractive. The singleton in partner's suit is also promising, though when you have trump length you don't necessarily want to try to get a ruff. Here, though, your trump holding is questionable. A third lead is possible--the K, but I would much rather lead a red suit that my partner has bid than gamble on a black suit. Depending on the lead and subsequent play, declarer might come close to making (particularly on the lead of the K), but down one seems about right--losing a diamond, two clubs and a heart or maybe a spade but only one club. Would 4 make? Double dummy thinks not, but it's nip and tuck. The defenders would need to draw dummy's trump or it might make.

Pass11NTPass
3NTAll pass

South opens 1, and West passes with a 5-card suit headed by the jack. North stretches to respond 1 with her own 5-card suit headed by the jack. Generally, we look for any excuse to respond to partner, and this is a good one. East bids 1NT. Some partnerships play this is takeout, but I much prefer being able to show a strong balanced hand with stoppers. South passes without support for partner's hearts. West could choose 2NT, but partner made a vul against not 1NT call which should be 16-18 or maybe even 19, so I'd believe her and bid 3NT. It turns out that this is a bit too much.

South leads a fourth-best club and is delighted to see J95 in dummy (as it increases the chances that declarer only has three of them). Declarer's best chance is to work on diamonds and hope something good happens. It doesn't since North gets in with the Q and plays another club, ending declarer's chances. Look what happens if South starts with the A, K and another club. Now when North gets in, he can't exit anything except a spade or a heart. When you might need your partner to lead a suit back to you, it's always best to start with a low one. Even if South had an extra club, a low club would have been the better lead.

West opens 1NT and East should use Stayman with this value/shape. The only time you avoid using Stayman with a 4-card major and an invitational or better hand is when you have no doubleton--4-3-3-3 shape. West bids 2 and East invites with 2NT. West passes with her bare minimum.

North could choose any card from her hand, but let's say she starts with the 5, fourth from her longest and strongest. Declarer wins and could play either clubs or hearts. I think hearts seems better since you don't want South leading a spade or a diamond. A heart to the J and Q and now North can't touch spades so might try any non-spade(declarer is known to have at most 3 hearts so a heart back isn't so bad). From this start can declarer still make 2NT? Possibly. It looks like declarer will take two spades, two hearts, a diamond and at least two clubs to start, but the play is complicated. Double dummy can see that doubleton queen of hearts. Playing clubs earlier is also a possibility, hoping that South has the J, but I wouldn't be that happy if South rises with the K and then plays a spade or diamond through my hand, but you'd still have lots of chances. Interesting play, but many different things could happen. I suspect making 2 will be an ok result.

I hope I still get paid for this auction. Just kidding--this is volunteer work. North has some interesting shape, but not nearly enough strength to think about bidding anything. East has an 11-count, and I do open all non-vulnerable 11-counts with some partners. I would need to have that agreement to think about opening this motley collection. QJ is a bad three points and the spots in the long suits max out at the 6, so you lack trick-taking potential. South is in 3rd-seat and as such might get aggressive, but I much prefer my aggressive actions to look more like overcalls. This hand has the strength for an overcall, but lacks the shape. With 10 points, South is much too likely to find that the deal looks something like this where she might wind up entirely too high. Playing vulnerable 1NTs with 10 opposite 8 or 9 isn't my favorite pastime. Things would be a little better if you had a third or fourth heart, then you could open a minor and pass 1 or 1. After a 1 call by partner today, you'd be stuck. West gets the last chance. It's only a point (or a spade) away from opening if you go by casino count (adding the spades to the high card points and opening if the total is 15). You could also use CRIFS (Cohen's Rule in Fourth Seat) which says, "before passing out a deal or opening in 4th-chair, look left and right." If you want to be sure to get a board in against those opponents, you might try opening. Sometimes the dealer in the sky gives us passout boards. We don't reshuffle, but ponder what may have been. And maybe go get some coffee.
