Probably pass and play for penalties is best, netting 500 and a top. But if you don't pass for penalties, West, what is your plan? A meek 3, for plus 150, as it turns out? A failure to show game strength will not gain a game bonus. The only way to get the game bonus is to bid it, depending on the meaning of 2NT.

In the critical position, 2NT in standard bidding meant enough for 2NT to be a decent contract, both in terms of HCP and stoppers. Perhaps East will bid on with the actual hand.

For those who play Good-Bad 2NT in this position, 3 would be forward-going, but a denial of spade stoppers. In this scenario, just bid 3NT if you want the game bonus, but passing and playing for a 500 top is better.

Spades are not going to be ruffed for profit, so Declarer has three tasks to perform, and not enough time: (1) lead up to the K for a spade discard (2) take a diamond finesse (3) play trumps for no losers by cashing the K and finessing the 9 next (applying Restricted Choice principles when the J falls, especially when coupled with an overcall, thus creating more vacant spaces in the West hand to hold heart length, supporting Restricted Choice).

A spade lead and diamond control will help declarer, never a good idea, but some might to that.

The number of tricks taken by North is heavily dependent on the defense.

This will be a deal that depends heavily on the defense -- using the power of holding four trumps that will require declarer's using all but one of his for the purpose of extracting West's trumps will weaken North's trump defense. A club lead from East will attack the weakness and prepare to tap out declarer's final trump, leaving the field to the club suit.

South can counter the defense by passing the quacky five-count. Declarers who receive less than effective defense will wonder why game was missed.

Will anyone actually overcall with the South hand? Instead, lead a spade against 3NT and see if East is up to the task of making that, with spades an imminent threat!

On a spade lead from South, East can count one spade, three hearts, two diamonds, and two clubs -- eight. Where does declarer find a ninth?

The answer is in the club suit. Play three rounds of clubs and establish a club.

"But, but, but. . .," you exclaim, South will run the spade suit. How can you prevent that?

I am not going to spoil your fun by telling you on this page -- you will have to find the solution yourself, before turning to hand 23, where the solution will be presented on an otherwise unannotated hand.

Or 1 - 2; 2 - 4NT, etc.

South has so much, and a diamond suit that is likely to provide tricks, with two side aces as entries, and trump fillers, that bidding the grand slam should be within view.

Even with a 4-1 diamond split, there is time to set up two long diamonds for pitches -- win, say, the club lead (best), draw two trumps leaving the queen or jack in dummy, and lead AKx when one opponent hypothetically shows out. Return to the high trump in dummy and ruff out the Q. Return to the A and play the two established diamonds for discards, making 13 tricks.

A bidding exercise using the visualization of the potential establishment of the powerful diamond suit for tricks during the bidding stage.

Craig Hemphill Hand Analysis

On hand 3, to make 3NT, declarer must make an absolutely impossible double-dummy duck of the first two spades, giving up a sure spade trick with the king at trick one, and refraining from playing the king at trick two. The spade suit blocks, and declarer can make the extra trick in clubs at his leisure.

An impossible play to make.
