 All pass

What a way to start! I couldn't resist having this auction. North and East don't have much to think about. Let's talk about third-seat openings. In third seat, you can be aggressive, but not indiscriminately. The idea of being aggressive is this: when two hands have passed, you know that neither your partner nor your RHO have more than 11 points. That means that if you are looking at 7 points, you know that your LHO is very likely to have at least an opening bid, and possibly more. The weaker your hand is, the more likely your LHO is itching to start the bidding. Bidding in third seat can make it harder for an opponent with a good hand to accurately describe it. When you have 10 or 11 points, the odds become more even that everyone has about the same. In that case, you have to decide whether you are likely to make something since you may very well wind up the declaring side. Here, with a particularly flat 11-count, you don't look forward to playing in either a suit contract or notrump. That's why I would pass. West could choose to open the bidding in fourth seat. If I was playing against particularly weak opponents, I would probably open (I call this approach CRIFS--Cohen's Rule in Fourth Seat).

East opens with a weak two-bid and South could consider jumping to 3. That would show an "invitational" hand with six spades. This South hand is probably a queen shy of that bid, but it's close. West continues partner's preempt with 3 and North could bid 4, but doubling is a more flexible choice. You frequently don't want to go past 3NT, so giving partner more choices is good. If partner chose clubs, you could always correct back to diamonds. East and West have done their jobs, but I see players get seduced by vulnerability all of the time. Don't. The same rules apply and you invite the opponents to get a good score when you may have put them in a bad contract. Giving them multiple opportunities to double you is bad bridge. Now South, knowing his side has the balance of the points, jumps to 4 with self-sufficient spades.

Against 4, West might as well lead the 3. The defense can take the first two heart tricks, but with the spade finesse working (and doubleton), it's hard to see them taking any more tricks. +650 should be a good score for any pairs that found the game.

South and West pass, giving us another chance to discuss third-seat openings. The North hand has more shape than the 4-3-3-3 in our previous discussion, but I wouldn't open since I'm not particularly sure about what I hope happens. If the opponents have a game somewhere, it rates to be notrump and I don't necessarily want partner to lead a spade more than a diamond. If forced, I'd open 1, but I'm happier passing. East has a balanced 17-count, but is way too strong for 1NT. With prime values and a 5-4-2-2 shape with an easy rebid, there's no rush to limit the hand. South passes and West responds 1NT, non-forcing as a passed hand. North passes and East bids 2 1/2 clubs. If they don't have that bid at your club, I'd bid 2 since the auction doesn't usually end there. South passes and West gratefully passes. North now might choose to balance with double, but it's possible that partner has some length in clubs and no good place to go. I also don't love balancing my opponents out of a minor-suit if they might find a better contract.

Against 2 on this auction, I usually close my eyes and lead a trump. The 10 might slow me down here. I would probably lead a spade or possibly a diamond. The defense can take two clubs and two spades eventually and they are likely to do that unless North makes the mistake of covering a diamond from West before the defense has taken spade tricks. Remember, that you don't cover an honor (from dummy) until it's not part of a touching sequence.

West has a difficult opening choice. 1 or 1 could be right. I chose 1 because my partners always bid 1NT when I open 1. North passes, just shy of a takeout double at these colors, and East responds 1NT. South passes and West bids 2. Now East has a few logical choices. You could argue for 2, 2NT, or 3. I think at matchpoints, it's ok to play conservatively (2). At imps, I would definitely find a more aggressive call. North could balance when it comes back to him, but the opponents are likely in a 5-2 fit and he doesn't want to risk -200 at these colors.

Against 2, North probably leads the K. The play from that point gets very murky. Should West win in dummy or ruff this heart to lead a spade towards the Q? Is it ok to play diamonds? I wouldn't expect any two declarers to take identical lines here. The bad trump split will probably doom this contract, but it's possible declarer might scramble 8 tricks.

5All pass

North passes and East can start with 1, knowing he'll have a bit a of a problem later. South overcalls 1 even with a mediocre suit. West could try something here, but everything feels wrong. Double promises 4 spades and could get you into a 4-3 (or 3-3 on a bad day) fit. 1NT could work, but Q65 isn't the kind of stopper you dream about. 2 is too big of an overbid and 3 is a bit of an underbid (and a poor choice as well). Pass for now, and maybe you'll get to bid diamonds later. North raises to only 3 since his side is vulnerable. This is a balanced hand, so bidding 4 with this is an unnecessary risk, particularly at these colors. East's rebid problem is solved as double looks like a standout. South passes and West should now show that he has a real hand by jumping to game: 5.

On a heart lead, declarer ruffs in dummy. Then what? I count two heart losers, one spade, and potentially 2 diamonds. I think the best combination is to play a low diamond back to hand intending to ruff another heart and later (after throwing the last heart on a club) play another diamond. When the king shows up on the first round, even better. Now a second diamond to the queen and you hope that the person with the J has to follow to two rounds of clubs. That works so you can continue playing all of your clubs and hope that the person with the J never tries ruffing in to allow you to pitch all of your spades as well. This is unlikely as good defenders will ruff the club at the first opportunity and force you with a heart or take their spade.
