3 4 4 All pass

After North and East pass, South is free to be imaginative in third-seat. 1 doesn't do much to get in the opponents' way so I'd try 2 . West's jump to 3 is not weak. You can't make a weak jump over a weak jump. Instead, 3 shows something like this hand--a good hand with a six-card suit. North competes to 4 and East bids 4 . Is it plausible for either North or South to find a sacrifice after this? Probably not. Trying to find a good sacrifice in a club game is often a losing proposition. If you go -300 and the opponents could make the game, you were getting a bad score for them being in game making (usually) and will still probably get a bad score for -300 (since it's rare for most of the field to find game). If that game might have gone down, then you took a good score (the opponents bid a game that people might not) and turned it into a zero. Think twice before you sacrifice.

North will lead the Q against 4 . The play is pretty straightforward from that point. Declarer draws trump and pitches a loser on the fourth heart, allowing declarer to take 11 tricks. It turns out that the 5 or 5 sacrifice could have been good for North-South, but again, I don't lose any sleep about missing potential sacrifices.

When you think of preempts, before you even look at your hand, think about seat and vulnerability. ACBL convention cards have a spot on the back that asks about preempt style. It has check boxes for "sound", "light", and "very light". In most of my partnerships I check all three boxes, because I'll be sound when vulnerable or in second seat, but light first seat, and potentially very light when I'm not vulnerable against vulnerable opponents. This is a silly part of the convention card. Anyways, the East hand is worth preempting at these colors (and only at these colors). South might have preempted also, given the chance, but can't bid after a preempt (as we discussed on Board 1, there are no weak bids after the opponents make a weak bid). West uses 2NT as a "feature ask". I hate this term, because even if you play 2NT as "feature asking", it is really asking, "Do you like your hand?" If the answer is yes, bid a Feature (even a queen, or J if you have to). If the answer is no, then repeat your suit, even if you have an outside ace as East does. East's rebid of 3 says, "Leave me alone!" West does.

South should lead the Q. When the dummy comes down, everyone needs to take stock. Declarer has two spade losers, two diamond losers, and a potential heart loser. How can declarer get rid of her heart loser? She can take a club finesse, she could hope for the QJ to be doubleton, or she could hope something good happens in spades (like defender playing the A and not capturing the K). If I were declarer, my plan would be to draw trumps and see if anything interesting happened. I might later hope to drop the Q by playing three rounds of that suit and ruffing the third round. Here, though, the play will be much easier depending on how South interprets what is happening. South will know that partner has the A when her Q wins trick one. Should she continue? Well if partner holds three spades, then declarer can ruff the next round. If partner only holds two spades, then partner will have to play the A setting up a trick for declarer. I might switch to a heart now since that's our best hope for additional tricks. When you have a trump control, you don't have to worry about not cashing your tricks immediately. Here, if you switch, you might eventually beat it, but it looks like the normal spade lead will always give declarer a chance to make.

PassPass?

South opens 1 with a strong 14 count. West passes and North stretches a bit to respond 1 . The modern style is to respond with any reason, and a five-card major is definitely a valid reason. East has a good hand and a heart suit that plays very well. When you see AJ109x, you should be excited. This suit is much better than AQ432. In fact, I'd rather have AJ1092 than AK432. Spot cards matter. East bids 2 . South's club suit warrants a rebid, even if it forces us to the 3-level. West passes and North probably passes as well, even though her shape has made her hand not useless. East is stuck. At other colors, East would double without a second thought, but -200 seems plausible. I might still double and hope to survive, but it's not clear nor is it clear what would happen next. Maybe West would bid diamonds or hearts, maybe North would make a delayed raise to 4 , maybe South would make a frisky double of 3 (I wouldn't, you have no tricks), anything is possible. I don't think North-South would find a double of any East-West contract though, so -100 is the worst they rate to do.

Against 3 West might shrug and lead the K. When that holds, West needs to decide whether to continue the suit or not. Looking at that dummy, a trump switch is tempting rather than play to score a trump trick myself. When dummy has ruffing values and nothing much in high cards, it's often best to take away dummy's source of tricks--trump. If West continues hearts, declarer can potentially take overtricks. If West switches to a trump, declarer can't get back to her own hand after ruffing a diamond, so will be held to 9 tricks.

All pass

West holds a nice heart suit and has some shape, but should pass in first seat, vulnerable. North opens 1 and East passes. South will respond 1 and the East-West pair will stay quiet from that point on. North bids 1 and South might bid only 3 if her partner has a history of overbidding (or underplaying). Most of the time, South will just jump to 4 .

East knows that the opponents are playing in a 4-4 fit, and has nothing more attractive to lead than a trump. Some Easts will lead a club which might make it a little easier for declarer. As the cards lie, declarer is going to have trouble if the defenders continue playing trump at every opportunity. The exact line is hard to say since declarer will have a lot of choices. I expect any declarers making with take a large percentage of the matchpoints. Careless defense will almost certainly have helped those declarers along the way.

Dbl?

The fun of opening the bidding in 3rd seat is that you can usually stop your partner from getting too excited about her hand. Here, after two passes, South has a normal 1 opening bid. West passes and North responds 1 . Now when it's South's turn she can simply pass since she has no interest in a game opposite a passed hand. What should West do? I think double stands out. No one gets rich defending 1 . North probably isn't interested in bidding anymore. East could consider passing, though that's a scary proposition. I think 1NT or 2 would be more likely spots. 2 rates to be the winner. I wouldn't jump here, partner is balancing and you don't want to bury partner for doing that. South probably doesn't make a delayed spade raise due to the vulnerability. North should already know that the South hand has at least 3 spades in order to pass the 1 response so neither of the partnership should want to compete to 2 .

Against 2 , South has a variety of appealing lead options: Q, 2, and Q all look plausible. I would rather lead a trump than a spade in the hopes of preventing a spade ruff in the dummy, but a club lead is also reasonable. Declarer should get to work ruffing spades and will eventually take a diamond and a club trick to go with two spades, and however many trump tricks declarer winds up winning. The QJ6 ruffing out will help declarer, but she still has to guess what to do next. The 8 in dummy winds up being an important card.
