When opener bids and rebids a minor and responder first responded in a major suit, bidding the other minor is best used as an artificial bid seeking clarification, including, when appropriate, supporting responder's major suit when opener holds three cards in that suit, but also giving a nod to the other major -- especially when spades were first mentioned and hearts have so far been ignored. That permits, among other advantages, responder to bid first 1 , then 2 , with modest values, attempting to play the best part score. With a game-valued hand, bid the other minor!

For those familiar with New Minor Forcing after a 1NT rebid, the method will seem very familiar, but since the auction is in a different context (rebid not notrump, rather in the original suit), there is a different name -- "Third Suit Forcing."

North shows the heart suit without sufficient values to reverse earlier, and South cannot get his head around that fact sufficiently to try slam.

OK, 6 makes, but only with a good guess in the heart suit after ruffing out the diamond suit. No, thanks, too small a making probability.

Same heart guess playing notrump, but diamonds are played first. Taking ten tricks should not be much difficulty.

  1. Splinter

  3. Two key cards plus the trump queen
  4. Kings or evaluate extras for grand?
  5. Got you covered.

In 2/1 theory, 3 is a Splinter raise of clubs -- it is not needed to show a strong hand with diamonds, since the Game Force has already been set. Splintering is a magnificent tool for hand evaluation.

4 is Minorwood, heavily recommended for slam investigation when a Game Force has been established in a minor suit -- the space-saving is of inestimable value.

4NT is the fourth step in the 1430 structure, showing two key cards plus the trump queen. 5 is ostensibly asking for specific kings, But South can take over and simply bid the grand, holding FIVE clubs, the K, and the Q (North must have the K or a singleton).

Bidding any grand is usually good for a good board -- on this board, in most sites, it will be a clear top or close to that.

Second seat vulnerable should require "disciplined" weak two bids, but there is something about the West hand that simply screams for a 2 call. Perhaps it is the heart void, perhaps the club potential -- certainly the spades are not of classic value.

But the bid makes East's call crystal clear and easy, so no cynical comments about West's lack of discipline.

A double of 3 would reap a huge reward for EW. Should East have lowered the boom? Not many club tricks will be taken, two being highly optimistic -- it is because of the unlikely two club tricks that the contract fails. No fault to East for failing to double -- it's just too close.

North passes the 4333 minimum-- some will open, but the source of optimism is difficult to discern. Notice that passing did not lose the opportunity, rather clarified the likelihood of success, for the best contract. When South can open and rebid clubs, North can visualize six clubs, one diamond, one spade, and surely, somehow, at least one, and likely more than one, other tricks.

Yep -- making ten tricks. No loss in passing the North hand, now was there?

Nothing induces playing in a major suit -- two 5-2 "fits" suggest playing 1NT. Favorable lies in spades, diamonds, and clubs just allow this rickety boat to limp into port. Such was the risk of opening that stuff in third seat.

No, don't bid the diamonds -- West won't think to bid the terrible hearts. Double to bring the other major into view and land your game. After a club lead, won, two diamonds will allow the club loser to be discarded, after which unblocking the A and ruffing a club will lead to the KQ and North will find it too difficult to defend.

East is entitled to show the pattern (almost) and the strength (3 !) of his hand, and lands in a safe contract.

How inappropriate would it have been to open the East hand 1NT -- even if allowed with a Q-high or better singleton, it isn't good bridge.

After a 1 opening bid (proper with 4-4 in the minors and both biddable suits), the Q is upgraded and North can be happy about game prospects. If West gets a spade ruff, it will be at the cost of a likely trump trick.
