East is worth a cue bid limit raise of spades for the following reasons: FOUR card support, TWO honors, no wastage in diamonds, and the AK. All of the honors in the East hand are working overtime, and the evaluation is enhanced by considering "in and out valuation." That principle was first expressed in the book, "Secrets of Winning Bridge," by Jeff Rubens. The idea is that the best configuration of a given set of values is to hold secondary (queens and jacks) in partner's proven suit and aces and kings outside -- and outside of the opponent's suit, if any.

East's hand meets all of those criteria in spades (ahem).

Goren essentially said the same thing, earlier, but in different terms. He taught (correctly) that you should upgrade by one point any honor holding in partner's suit of fewer than four points. That is, count a jack as two, queen as three, king as four, and queen-jack as four. So he would have upgraded by adding to the point count here.

And the value of the fourth trump is clear.

Cue bid more to show strength in support of partner's suit when holding limit raise values.

Was West's raise a good idea or a bad idea? We are generally taught that increasing the level of bidding interferes with the opponents' bidding. Is it true? Sometimes, surely. Always? Probably not.

Here, for example, if West had passed, North would double, for sure, but would even a jump to 3 be raise to game? Not universally, although sometimes game would be reached. However, after a double of 3 , South's bidding game is a given.

It would be a cowardly North who would pass either 2 or 3 .

East is strong enough to double and raise either major suit, and South's barrage of diamonds will not deter him -- well, short of an opening bid of 5 ! Even then, a double seems clear, and West would bid 5 with six of the Boss Suit.

So, again, South will not be able to shut out East.

Will North bid on? A double would be disastrous, and North does have a bunch of losers. Discretion is the better part. . .

But how many of us have discretion?

2 ?

One could look at the North hand with rose-colored glasses, evaluating the hand upwards for the good spade honors, singleton club, and diamond values, leading to a 3 cue bid, showing a limit raise. On the other hand, the pessimistic view would be that South, a third hand opener, might be less robust, and that (1) the chances for game will require a South hand that can take another bid if North bids just 2 (2) the diamonds are nicely placed, but don't add much to offense, but if the opportunity arose in which defense became a possibility, OH BOY! (3) with just three trumps, it might not be possible to ruff out all of South's club losers. Surely the defense will lead trumps, capsizing the boat. (4) North's long suit is weak.

We choose the pessimistic view, and recommend 2 with the North hand.

If it goes pass, pass, back to West and that worthy selects 3 , now North can lower the boom.

It is a shame that the standard auction prevents South from declaring, with all of those tenaces! South can make eleven tricks against perfect defense, North just ten. But that perfect defense means that East, on lead, must not lead a heart. Perhaps those modern folks who play transfer responses to opening 1 bids have something to their methods! At least they would claim an advantage on this deal. One would suppose that after 1 - 1 ( ); 2NT - 3 would be a re-transfer for them. But then they need a method to show true two-suiters! The tangled web. Those methods are only for dedicated partnerships.

A diamond lead establishes a diamond trick before one can be discarded on the Q as soon as that honor is established. Declarer must inevitably lose a club and the A.

A club lead from East works as well, hitting the really weak club suit. West can relax and wait for his two club tricks after winning the heart ace -- even if a bit endplayed, there are three tricks in clubs and hearts then.

The main issue on the hand is the play of the trump suit, and it is likely that the significant majority of declarers will get it wrong, playing the top spades, hoping for 2-2 distribution.

If East leads a club or diamond and gets a trump, this contract might actually be set at some tables, a two-trick difference from the result at a precious few tables.

  1. Drury
  2. forcing -- do you have a source of tricks?
  3. No, but slam interest and a splinter
  4. Two PLUS THE QUEEN of spades. . .. or ten trumps!

Hands like East's are typically underbid -- three controls, FIVE trumps, and a singleton!

The 2NT bid is of particular note -- after Drury, it is best used as a slam try, asking for a "source of tricks." That is not a well-defined concept, rather a request for judgment. The 4 Splinter expresses enthusiasm for slam, rather than a "maybe" source with 3 -- an option, surely. The difference between 3 and 4 is the enthusiasm expressed by the 4 call, rather than a sheepish, "OK, how about here?"

The 5 reply to 4NT shows the queen. . .. Well, of course, the fifth trump means that the A fifth opposite K fifth will run the suit is such a high probability that the queen will likely fall. Add the jack to either hand and the odds improve again.

  1. Quality-quantity. An inquiry regarding the nature of the raise.
  2. Maximum raise with four trumps.
  3. Trump queen?

North's auction is a tad optimistic, but is based on a sound foundation - the double fit, coupled with the high probability that South has four or more diamonds for the opening bid. Yes, it is possible that South is 4=4=3=2, but much more likely is that there are at least four diamonds accompanying the 1 opening bid. Some folks guarantee that, and are on firmer ground. Precision players might have a doubleton -- not as good.

4 was a control bid denying a club control (A, K, singleton, or void), and South's 4 promised a club control, of course, else would sign off -- showing the club control justified the key-card inquiry.

In some respects, this is a five or seven hand. if the diamond queen rides high, then, on a club lead, there are only eleven tricks. When the Q falls, there are thirteen.

What are the odds, and should this hand be bid to slam? The probability that the queen will fall doubleton is roughly 40%, but if you add the possibility that the queen is singleton, (1/4 of all of the 3-1 distributions), you add another 12% or so. So the odds are greater than 50% that this slam will make, and according to the theorists, should be bid.

Oh, and if East had a singleton diamond and hopefully led it, you could send a thank you note.
