Lynn Berg typically provides analysis for 299ers on boards 1-18. Additionally, analysis for more advanced players is available for boards 1-2, 4, 6, and 11.

The Bidding: After North opens a Weak Two Diamonds , East overcalls 2NT showing 15-18 HCP and a diamond stopper. Puppet Stayman Over 2NT is a bad idea because of the difficulty with hands where opener is (54) in the majors. Stayman is better because it allows responder to use Smolen with (54) in the majors. With that agreement, West's 3 bid is Stayman. East shows 4 hearts. West places the contract in 4 .

Partnerships with good memories wishing to ask the 2NT bidder if they have a 5-card major can play Muppet Stayman . This agreement allows responder to comfortably bid hands with (54) in the majors. Here, 4 is easy to find playing Stayman, Puppet Stayman, or Muppet Stayman.

The Play: South leads their singleton diamond. Declarer wins their Ace. Declarer wants to ruff 2 diamonds and a club. So declarer delays drawing trump. There is no risk of an overruff in diamonds. However, the club ruff is risky. Declarer prudently ruffs a club high. Now a Cross-Ruff brings declarer to 11 tricks.

4 All pass

The Bidding: After East opens 1 , South has a choice between passing and overcalling 2 . The vulnerability is unfavorable. South's hand is aceless. Overcalling 2 is risky. Passing is also risky. Passing may lead to a difficult decision at a higher level. Overcalling 2 now seems best. West is a bit light for a Splinter bid. A Splinter bid is a slam try, looking for well fitting hands. However, 4-card support with shortness will often provide 10 tricks. Even when 10 tricks are not available, 4 may be a good sacrifice. West's club suit is worth more than 5 HCP. AQxx counts as 6 HCP, but has only an 18% chance of taking 3 tricks opposite 3 small. AJTx has a 45% chance of taking 3 tricks opposite 3 small. Jumping to 4 seems best. North has heart support and spade shortness. In order for a 5 sacrifice to be profitable at unfavorable vulnerability, 4 must be making and 10 tricks must be a available in a heart contract. North isn't willing to bet on that parlay. Defending 4 seems best.

The Play in 4 : Declarer has a quick diamond loser. With the King offside, declarer must loser a spade trick. Declarer has 2 potential club losers. A double finesse offers a 75% chance limiting club losers to 1 trick. Here, South holds both missing club honors. So declarer loses just 1 club trick. Declarer scores 10 tricks: 5 + 2 + 1 ruff + 2 . If the defense doesn't cash their diamond trick before declarer establishes clubs, declarer's diamond loser will be discarded on a club winner.

The Play in 5 X: To hold declarer to 7 tricks, West must lead a heart or the Jack or 10. On a trump lead, East wins and switches to a club. West finds the Double Dummy duck when declarer splits their club honors. Now declarer is end played. That defense isn't easy to find seeing all 4 hands. However, holding declarer to 8 tricks for +800 should be routine.

The Bidding: After West opens 1 , North overcalls 2 . East would like to ask West if they have a heart stopper. The standard agreement for a 3 cue bid is to show an invitational or better spade raise. So West cannot cue bid to ask about a heart stopper. East forces with a 3 response. West shows their heart stopper by bidding 3NT, ending the auction.

The Play: Declarer has 10 quick winners.

  Pass2
All pass

The Bidding: East's hand falls short of the Rule of 20 and the Suggestion of 22 for a 1st or 2nd seat opener. After dealer passes, 2nd seat preempts should be disciplined because opener's pass decreases the likelihood the board belongs to the opponents. Here, South has a book Weak Two Diamonds preempt. West has a choice between passing and overcalling 3 . West's 2 small diamonds are a negative. West's 6-card club suit has poor texture. When defending against a preempt, it pays to be aggressive with shortness. With 2+ quick losers in the preemptor's suit, conservatism is advisable. Opposite a passed hand, overcalling 3 is risky. Even when it is right to play 3 , partner will often push the auction to an uncomfortable level. Passing seems best.

At tables where West overcalls 3 , East, with 11 HCP, a club fit, and a diamond stopper, must guess whether to pass, invite a club game, or bid 3NT. A notrump game requires only 9 tricks. When 3NT is feasible, looking for 5 is a poor matchpoint strategy. If West stretched for their 3 overcall or is a minimum, 3 may be the limit. If West has a good 3 overcall, 3NT may be cold. The ACBL mandates a 10 second pause after a skip bid to avoid the tempo of West's bid communicating unauthorized information. The likelihood that 9 or more quick winners are available makes bidding 3NT attractive.

The Play in 2 : The defense has 5 quick winners. The defense can score 2 additional tricks by finessing against North's Queen and navigating a spade ruff.

The Play in 3 : Declarer has a diamond loser, a spade loser, a potential club loser, and a potential heart loser. With the King offside, declarer cannot avoid a club loser. Declarer has a 2-way finesse for the Queen. Before tackling the heart suit, declarer should attempt to learn the distribution. When declarer draws trump and ruffs the 3rd round of spades, declarer learns South has 1 club and at least 3 spades. South should have 6 diamonds for their Weak 2 opening. That leaves room for at most 3 hearts. Declarer expects North to hold 4 hearts. The Vacant Spaces principle advises finessing against North for the Queen. Declarer scores 10 tricks: 1 + 3 + 1 + 5 .

The Play in 3NT: If South makes their standard 4th best diamond lead, North plays their Jack. Declarer must Hold Up . South isn't likely to have a side entry. There isn't must future in diamonds. North's shift to the King beats 3NT by 2 tricks.

David Loeb Hand Analysis
WestNorthEastSouth
   Pass
4 DblPass4
PassPassDblAll pass

The Bidding: After South passes, West has a choice between passing, opening 1 , and preempting in hearts. There is a easy way to show a solid suit after a Weak Two opening. Here, West has 7 running hearts. There is no room to show that over a 3 preempt. Opening 3 risks missing a cold game. Passing is also risky. West may have difficulty showing their playing strength after passing. Opening 1 with so little defensive potential is risky. Opening 4 seems best. In his "Bidding Over Preempts" lecture, Roger Lee advises "When one of us has shortness, it pays to bid if it’s reasonable." North Doubles for Takeout . It is common to convert high level Takeout Double for penalty. Here, South has 5 spades and club shortness. Bidding 4 is reasonable. East doubles 4 for penalty.

The Play in 4 : West cashes their high clubs. Declarer has the remaining 10 tricks: 1 + 7 + 2 .

The Play in 4 X: West leads the Ace. When dummy tables, it is common to signal Suit Preference . East plays the 9 to ask for a diamond shift. West cannot comply. A club shift isn't likely to accomplish anything. A spade shift allows East to gain the lead their Ace. Now East can cash their high diamonds and give West a diamond ruff. The defense scores 5 tricks for +300.

At tables where West leads a club or continues hearts at trick 2, declarer can infer West's diamond void. Declarer sees the risk of a diamond ruff. If spades are 2-2, declarer can escape for down 1. Declarer cashes 3 clubs discarding 2 diamonds. Now a spade is led from dummy. East wins their Ace and cashes their high diamonds. When East leads a 3rd round of diamonds, declarer ruffs high and draws trump.
